I'll Admit It - I Like Barry Bonds

Note: I posted this a couple months ago (before Jason Grimsley sang his sweet song) on my 'other blog' and wanted to share it (with some updated edits) with y'all so you can mock me with impunity

OK, I'll say it... I like Barry Bonds.

I'm sick of it...

People, as a whole - you are all stupid! (I always say "a person can be smart, but people are always stupid")

Every time I read the sports page; gossip, hearsay, accusations!!!

Whatever happened to - scores, standings and transactions???

Look, I love sports. Great pastimes, those sports, all of them. However, get a life! Does anyone need to hear a soundbite from Barry Lamar Bonds everytime he ponders the meanings of existence?

Great Baseball player, that Barry Bonds. and......That's where it ends! Maybe he can dance a jig, maybe he can whip up some fine stir-fry, it's possible he can juggle a bowling ball, a running chainsaw and a flaming cat. Other than the fact he is a great baseball player and gets paid handsomely to do so, is anything else about him relevant to you? Any of our business? Seriously...?

If he did or didn't take enhancing substances, or if his flaxseed oil was made from green mamba sweat, if he's popping fistfulls of greenies, snorting dried Leprechaun brains or praying to Jobu, I don't care! And neither did anyone else when it was September 2001 and Barry was splashing them in the 'Cove, helping a scorned nation heal. No one complained then; and WHY? would they?

Look, Babe Ruth did coke and banged hookers, Michael Jordan gambled and routinely cheated on his wife (probably still does), Mickey Mantle was an alcoholic and amphetamine addict, Hulk Hogan did steroids and has stupid kids, O.J. Simpson was a pretty bad actor, Jim Brown slapped his girlfriend around and went to jail, Magic Johnson has (or had) HIV, Charles Barkley is a fat a$$hole (I still love him though)... yet we LIKE them so they get a free pass (except OJ, I just threw him in the conversation 'cause he's such an easy target)...

Barry doesn't like the media, so OF COURSE the media tries to destroy him at every chance. Now, if he gets busted by the IRS for tax issues, or for perjury THEN he had it coming to him, but to single him out as the 'Performance Enhancing Drugs' paraih IS NOT JOURNALISM, it's a vendetta.

We hold our athletes up to an impossible standard because 'we want to set an example for our kids'. Where does that same standard apply to the media??? My kids will watch THOUSANDS of more hours of sports journalism and news reports than actual sporting events...

Look, sports are supposed to be fun, but TOO many people look to 'SPORTS' to fill some blaring inadequacy in their personal being. This is why so many losers are Yankees fans. They make themselves feel better by attaching themselves to a winning franchise... OR, let's find every ounce of dirt on someone so we can say we're better than these rich, obnoxious 'cheaters'.

Maybe you are better than them (and me for that matter)...I've never personally met Barry Bonds, (I've heard he's a jerk - mostly from people that could be considered jerks themselves) I have seen him hit 2 jacks in a game TWICE (Once with the Pirates) but I'm sure if we got to talking, he'd probably bore me as fast as any other regular schmuck on the street. I'm not going to ask either one for their autograph (what is the point of autographs anyway? - unless it's on a check)

Dude is living his life and will pay the consequences for his actions good or bad. Just like you, too.

My accountant couldn't hit a tee-ball, let alone a splitter 500 feet, my accountant can drink all of the caffeine, eat all the greenies, smoke meth, wear a dress, beat his dog, I don't care! Just do the job right and I'm happy... and it won't be front page news.

I'm just a sports fan, enjoying the drama that matters most - ON THE FIELD OF PLAY. Save the drama B.S. for Jerry Springer...

Cheating and baseball are magical together - it's part of the lore - spitballs, corked bats, Shoeless Joe, pine tar, sandpaper, thumbtacks, A.J Pierzynski...

Great article - even though I disagree with it. If my Patriots were all rambunctious, steroid-using, drug-addicted criminals, I'd pick another team to root for, no matter how many Super Bowls they had won. Despite this, it's interesting to hear the other side of the story that the media doesn't show.

Good article, although I disagree too. Cheating is wrong. We all count on the integrity of sports, and when that is taken away from us, you have to look at it skeptically.

Cheating is wrong! Leaking Grand Jury Testimonies is also cheating, AND ILLEGAL!!! I'm not defending Barry, but merely doing to the media what they do to him...

"I'm not defending Barry, but merely doing to the media what they do to him..." Um, no you're not. All you're doing is proving your total incomprehension of the situation. Printing leaked grand jury information is not wrong; leaking the grand jury information is. So blame the person who leaked it, not the media for printing it. Printing information is their job, and it's not illegal. Get a grip.

As much of a douchebag Pierzynski is, he didn't cheat. He ran when he thought the ball was in the dirt and didn't hear or see the umpire make the "out" signal, just the strike three call. Just because it's strike three doesn't mean you're out. As for the rest of the article, just because there have been cheaters in the past, doesn't mean we should give a free pass to all followers. That's like saying we should've let Jeffrey Dahmer go free because he followed in the footsteps of Ted Bundy and Charlie Manson...only to a lesser degree.

I don't like Bonds, but not (only) because of the cheating. I like a sports star that respects the people that pay his salary (both directly and indirectly).

By the way, "THOUSANDS of more hours of sports journalism"? The TV does have other channels, not to mention an off button. :-)

This article entirely misses the main point of the Bonds controversy. For me, and for most baseball fans, the issue isn't that Bonds is an asshole. The issue is that he's a cheating asshole. Bad behavior is not why he's being crucified in the media; cheating is. Get your head screwed on straight. The "media conspiracy theory" idea is horseshit, frankly. Manny doesn't like the media either; has he ever been accused of cheating? Apologists for people like Bonds make me sick.

The fact that you imply having HIV is a bad, wrong thing for which someone should be punished only proves how incredibly ignorant you are, and how totally worthless your opinion is.

Wow, you are all SERIOUSLY too sensitive... and the only thing I have ever cheated at is video games. NEVER even once cheated in school. Besides, if the rules don't say it, it's not cheating right? Good to see the hot button is so easy to push nowadays... and by the way, since you know NONE of the 'other cheaters' personally, how do you know they're NOT assholes too? Glad you loved the post! (umm, Magic cheated on his wife to get HIV... and cheated on Isiah, too)

Good article. It's good to see that not everyone judges Bonds by just one fact: steroids. A cheater is a cheater, but look at what he has accomplished. Everyone (I don't want to say cheat but I'll say) manipulates their way to becoming who they want to be. Eventually, the talk about Barry Bonds will fade away, like many other things that you mentioned above. The thoughts will still be in people's heads, but they'll get sick of talking about it...
