Hurting The League!

It's clear that the NFL has fallen over the last couple of seasons. Players are involved in shootings, drinking and driving, and dog fighting.

This has hurt the NFL image, and these players continue with this behavior.

With the stuff that the NFL has had to deal with, their image is now worse than Major League Baseball.

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick, Chicago Bears' Tank Johnson, and now New England Patriots Rodney Harrison.

The NFL has suspended Rodney Harrison, after admitting to using human growth hormone.

Did he fool the fans; thinking he had all that talent.

Why did he use them?

He was considered one of the best defensive players in the NFL, now he killed his image.

It's not worth it, he could be a better player without them. Using human growth hormone can hurt an athletes body later on in life. These athletes don't see that, they think it's cool to use this drug.

Why take the risk, it's not worth it. These athletes need to use the talent God has given them, because that is what gotten them to the promise land.

NFL In Trouble

The NFL has found themselves in a deep hole, and they're not the reason why.

Major League Baseball's problem was in the front office, and they could have stoped their issues. But they made a lack of effort.

For the NFL it's all on the players. They're getting involved in illegal activities, and not using their smarts.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has done a great job. He is taking these players down; suspending them, and not given them a break. That's a good commissioner, the NFL needs him.

This league can't afford a Bud Selig type commissioner, because it will make the league worse.

Players that hurt the NFL's image shouldn't be allowed to play in the league. It's wrong, they don't stay out of trouble. If they can't live by the rules, they need to be out for good.

If I'm running a business, I don't want workers that are going to hurt the image of my company. That's how the NFL needs to look at it.

These players get into too much trouble, it needs to stop.

The three strike rule should be put in.

Easy Way Out!

Another problem is these athlete get the easy way out.

For an example, while back Cleveland Browns running back Jamal Lewis has gotten involved in a drug deal, and he didn't spend that much time in prison.

If a regular person did the same thing that Jamel Lewis got himself into, that person would still be in prison.

There are other cases that athletes have gotten into trouble with the law, and they got an easy way out.

It doesn't matter if they're famous, or how big their name is. Who ever does the crime, should do the time.

How are these athletes going to learn their lesson when the judge always gives them a break? It can't work like this, because sports will never get better.

I don't think Rodney Harrison's image will be tarnished once he returns to the field. Nobody really seems to consider Shawne Merriman any less of a player after being suspended last season for steroid abuse.

It is amazing the difference in attitude on PEDs between baseball and football. Ballplayers that test positive (or even suspected) are branded with a Scarlett letter "S" while football followers merely shrug.

Perhaps MLB needs more serious off-field misbehavior to deflect attention away from its PED controversies?

Never before has a sarcasm font been needed more here!

I don't understand why this matter (Henry and his kids) is any of our business as long as these kids are fed, clothed, and sheltered.

I hate to say it, TB, but the reason that this is news is because of the color of the man's skin versus the color of the skin of the writer. Because of the cultural differences, that is the news. Not the story itself.

Travis Henry could be purple skinned with green horns while procreating 20 kids for all I care, just as long as law abiding parental responsibilities are being met. Until that occurs, what business is this of ours?

To be fair about this situation, over on another page here at the 'Chair is a link to an article about Henry and court ordered child support payments. However, Henry has not been charged with ANY crimes relating to these matters which still seem (IMO) none of our damn business!

I see your point, but people who enter the public domain and profit from it--ie. politicians, atheletes, musicians--put their private lives under scrutiny de facto. Maybe in a purist sense it's not right per se, but it is reality. How did Clinton's getting a BJ affect his ability to preside over congress? I'm not sure, but the fact is, because of his position it was, in the modern sense, newsworthy. Of course, Travis Henry is not the president of the united states, but he has profited from being in the public domain. And however distasteful it may seem to you, his private life is fair game.

HGH is not a steroid. HGH just helped him come back faster. Also, to expect them to stay out of trouble is kind of impossible. They've been wired to a mindset that off the field is not a good one. They're taught that so long as they don't get caught, whatever they do is ok, and that they need to do whatever it is to avoid being stopped. Imagine that in a regular person. That'd create a lot of trouble

thanks. I agree what they do is wrong, but it's not like we shouldn't have expected it. When we train guys to act in a way unacceptable off the field, and expect them to just turn it off. It's almost always defensive players. Most Qb's stay out of trouble. I think there's something in there. I'll probably write something about that tomorrow.

Any way to only permit registered members to plus or minus? Might cut down on the random minus grading which screw up the ratings?

I really don't think Rodney Harrison's name belongs in the same sentence as Vick's or Johnson's when talking about off field discrepancies.

I don't think Harrison's name belongs with Vick or Johnson YET, but this article does a nice job of touching on a burning issue in my mind about the NFL, which is what happened? Everything seemed fine in the league not too long ago. Following the 2005 season, Paul Tagliabue was still in power, the Steelers were crowned the league's champion in the 40th Super Bowl, and the league was, as it had been, the greatest group of professional franchises the world had seen. Indeed, it seemed like everything the NFL touched turned to gold. But then, labor struggle pushed the league to the brink of going without a salary cap, Tagliabue, so stressed by the negotiations, uses them as an opportunity to retire, and Goodell takes charge. Goodell is a good comissioner, but for some reason, this league has changed dramatically since he took office. I used to love the NFL game and everything that went with it. Now, I'm disgusted by the NFL as a whole, its players especially. Where did that NFL of 2005 go? I, as well as many of my fellow fans I'm sure, would like it back as soon as possible.
