Hughie Jennings (Hugh Ambrose Jennings) was born on April 2, 1869 in Pittston, Pennsylvania. He made his Major League debut on June 1, 1891 for the Louisville Colonels. In 1891, his rookie year, he hit .292 with 1 home run and 58 RBI. Jennings played for the Louisville Colonels, Baltimore Orioles, Brooklyn Superbas, Philadelphia Phillies and Detroit Tigers over the course of his 16 year career.

There is some disagreement on what was Hughie Jennings's most productive season. Some believe that it was 1895, when he stole 53 bases, hit for a .386 average and knocked in 125 runs. However, others believe that it was 1896, when he stole 70 bases, hit for a .401 average and knocked in 121 runs.
