Hughes to join Yankees rotation

ESPN is reporting that New York Yankees uber-prospect Philip Hughes will join the ballclub and start against the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday, April 26th. Many (including myself) have questioned Hughes' absence from the Bronx Bombers' rotation, considering the dire condition of their pitching staff in light of the three-game sweep they suffered at the hands of the rival Boston Red Sox, including two games started by inexperienced pitchers Jeff Karstens and Chase Wright; the latter had never pitched above AA-ball before this year.

Hughes is considered by many to be the number one pitching prospect in all of baseball, and one of a few gems in what has long been a relatively bare farm system.

Hughes may or may not be ready for the majors at this point, but that shouldn't matter.
  1. A semi-ready Hughes is better than Karstens or Wright will ever be.
  2. Pitchers have a certain amount of time before there arms are worn down. Those innings may as well come in the majors.
  3. The Yankees don't need to worry about starting the arbitration clock too early on Hughes, since they are a win-now, sign free agents type club, not a rebuilding team.
  4. If Hughes pitches too his potential, he is a better pitcher right now than Mussina, Wang, or anyone else the Yanks will throw out there this year.

Its a tough division to pitch in. What type of numbers do you think he's capable of?

Hughes has as high a ceiling as any minor league pitcher, and the Yankees have shown unusual patience with him. Even without the injuries the major league staff has had, Hughes would likely have been called up by the All-Star break, at the latest.

You are right, the division is difficult, as is the entire league, and his numbers may be a bit skewed not because of lack of talent or experience, but by his opposition.

I have not seen Hughes pitch in person, but I did see Homer Bailey of the Reds, who is considered the second best prospect. And Bailey is special, so if Hughes is considered better than good for the Yankees. And its about time.

Where did you see Hughes is considered better than Bailey? I'd like some sources on this

Here is one source. Hughes and Bailey are pretty much regarded as 1A and 1B on any prospect list.

That is what I was under the impression of as well. Hughes with greater control, Bailey with better stuff. I never have known one to be more highly regarded over the other.

1) Correct 2) Correct 3) Incorrect. At least recently. For the first time in a long time, the Yankees farm system is in the top 10. I see a noticeable difference in the talent level at some of the lower classifications. Granted, the last couple of years they have struggles with some of their minor league fill-ins, (Cabrera, Bubba Crosby, Andy Phillips) but their is, for the first time in a long while, help on the horizon.

4)Hughes is good, but has never pitched in a major league game. He may be better than Karstens and Wright but certainly not Mussina or Wang.

Liriano, Papelbon, Jered Weaver, Dontrelle Willis, etc. They were all guys who had never pitched in the majors, and they all had tremendous starts to their careers. I think Hughes could definitely do what they did, making him better than Wang or Mussina.

Everyone is a rookie at one time, right Tim.

Thanks BBall. Another source is the Sporting news, who has Hughes the third best overall prospect and top pitcher, with Bailey ranking fifth, and second, respectively. Not to worry Tartan, everything I say can be documented.

Hughes is a welcome addition, but will have to learn under fire. Eventually, he can become a great pitcher, we will have to give him time. As far as right now, Pettitte, Wang and Mussina will remain the main three. Just like we have to give dice-k some time, let's see how he pitches late summer into september/october. Pitching in Japan is one thing, pitching in the major leagues is another.
