Howard Keys (Howard N. Keys) was born on January 24, 1935 in Orlando, Oklahoma. After going to high school at Stillwater (OK), Keys attended Oklahoma State University. Sonny played both ways for the Cowboys and is remembered as a "mauling defender" in the 1958 Blue Grass Bowl which was broadcast by Howard Cosell. Keys made his professional debut in the NFL in 1960 with the Philadelphia Eagles. He played for the Philadelphia Eagles for five years earning an NFL world championship ring. Tommy McDonald cited his line man friend in a book "They Play Me To Catch Footballs." He coached for four years with the Calgary Stampeders and three years with the Cleveland Browns before his tragic death from complications of cancer. His outstanding scouting and recruiting abilities made his legacy live on in the NFL. For example, he brought fellow OSU alum, Jerry Sherk, to the Cleveland Browns, along with many other top talents. The Philadelphia Eagles dedicated their Christmas card to his memory in 1971.
