How would it look if Dale Jr. had those 100 points back?

by Kendroberts

With 3 races left, here are how the odds of making the Chase would look if Dale Jr. had never lost 100 points for the illegal rear wing mounting at Darlington:

So Dale Jr.'s current odds are 8.9% with 3 races left, but with the 100 extra points they would be 40.3%

I wrote a computer program that randomly generates results for each remaining race before the Chase. Then it tallies each driver's position and repeats, millions of times. When the simulation "runs" a race it gives each of the top 43 drivers an equal chance of finishing in any of the 43 spots, like picking numbers from a hat.

Here is an update with 2 races left.

No doubt the Darlington penalty hurt, but that's far from the only way DEI has screwed over Junior this season. The No. 8 car has had five engine failures this season, and at least three of them have come after his announcement that he'd be leaving DEI at the end of the year and going to Hendrick. Add that to the bad blood between Junior and DEI owner and stepmother Teresa Earnhardt and I can't help but wonder if they're trying to sabatoge him on the way out the door. It's going to be shame watching DEI in the future without an Earnhardt behind the wheel, and I'm pretty sure this wasn't what Dale Sr. had in mind when he founded the company. Here's hoping karma comes back and set things right in the future -- and Junior wins at least one Nextel Cup with Hendrick.

I agree that the recent engine failures have hurt him, but (and correct me if I'm reading this wrong, please) I don't think anyone can definitively say that was DEI's fault. They don't fabricate the engines, I don't think. Truex also had an engine go out on him recently, if I remember correctly. Does it suck? Absolutely. Is it on PURPOSE? Don't think so.

Also, whether or not Junior left DEI this season or not, his focus has not been on racing, especially SINCE announcing that he's leaving DEI for Hendrick. Before he just had to deal with the fights with Teresa; now he's fielding comments about Kyle Busch's comments about being "pushed out" of Hendrick, how he's dealing with being essentially left out of his father's company, the recent battle for his number (which he's lost), and now he's actually DEFENDING Teresa in the papers, telling people to quit writing such unsavory things about her. If Junior really had his head 100% in the game, maybe his outcomes would be a little different. Not that I blame him for being distracted, lord knows I would be.

I just don't think that it's fair to completely blame outside stimuli on a problem that has internal roots as well.

I won't take NASCAR seriously until certain attitudes change within this "sport".

Reminded me of this Letterman "Top 10". Dave is probably closer to the "truth" on these "reasons" than NASCAR would ever admit:

David Letterman's Top 10 reasons why there are no black NASCAR drivers: (I bet his life will be miserable after the NAACP sees this!)

  1. 10 - Have to sit upright while driving.
  1. 9 - Pistol won't stay under front seat.
  1. 8 - Engine noise drowns out the rap music.
  1. 7 - Pit crew can't work on car while holding up pants at the same time.
  1. 6 - They keep trying to carjack Dale JR.
  1. 5 - Police cars on track interfere with race.
  1. 4 - No passenger seat for the Ho.
  1. 3 - No Cadillac's approved for competition.
  1. 2 - Can't wear helmet sideways.

AND THE NUMBER ONE REASON WHY BLACKS CAN'T BE IN NASCAR...

  1. 1 - When they crash their cars, they bail out and run.
