How the Pirates Made My 4th of July Happy

First I would like to apologize to our faithful readers for not posting yesterday...but hey it was a holiday and we had work. So there wasn't any bar-b-Q's or family gatherings for us. There was work and lots of rain. Which put a real damper on my 4th of July.

Then I came home at 11:30 at night and read about my Pirates. With a half hour left in the day, I went from being completely miserable to jumping up and down with glee.

THE PIRATES BEAT THE BREWERS!!!

It turns out that this might be the best game the Pirates have played all season, maybe the best game in years. It was defiantly the best game played on the 4th of July, 2007.

Despite giving up a three run Homer in the first inning Ian Snell went on to pitch 7 shut out innings of baseball. He gave up singles to the first two batters he faced and a home run to the third. He continued though never faltering. The second thought the eighth we well pitched shut out baseball.

">Jim Jim Tracy said of his Pitcher:

"To turn around and go through the next seven innings the way he did is another sign of the man this pitcher is becoming," Tracy said. "That's a phenomenal eight innings of pitching when you consider the way the first inning started."

">Brewers Brewers manager Ned Yost said:

"He's always been pretty tough on us," Yost said. "And he did a really nice job from that point on."

Nate McLouth started the jackhammer that would chip away at the Brewers' lead with a triple. He would score and Ryan Domit would add on two more with his home run. That would put the score at 3-3.

It was Adam LaRoch who would put the Pirates over the top with a two run shot on a 3-0 pitch. That lead would be saved by a very tough 4-6-3 double play. It was a line shot to Freddy Sanchez who quickly through to Jack Wilson who shot the ball back to LaRoch to get out of an inning where the Brewers were threatening with runners on the corners.

To cap off the day (no pun intended) Matt Capps got the save but only after allowing a double and a hit to the warning track that would end the game.

The Qout of the day that made me the happiest. Was:

"All I want to do is win and get this team to the playoffs."

Yep you guest it... Ian Snell.

If this is all the Pirates have to do to keep their fans happy then I guess losing 90 games a year really doesn't matter...

It is a shame. The Pirates were once such a great frachise. Then it all crashed and burned in the early 90's. The economics of the sport began to favor the big market teams considerably. The Pirates went thru a few owners. And they their magic touch. I hope they get it back one of these days. The ballpark they have truly deserves a championship team playing inside it.
