The Boston Red Sox are much different this year, then last.  Last year, it was Manny, and Ortiz pretty much doing all the work, getting all the home runs, and had the best stats by a mile, but this year, Ortiz, and Manny have a little more help.  Rookie 2B Dustin Pedroia has the best BA on the team with a .328 average.  David Ortiz, and Manny both have just 19 HR's, but last year, Ortiz had 54, and Ramirez had 35, they'll be lucky if they even reach 30 this year.  What is with them?  They are not performing well, but i'll tell you who is, Mike Lowell.  He's got a .311 BA (3rd on team), 16 HR's (2nd on team), 132 hits (1st on team), 79 RBI's (1st on team), as well as a .362 OBP (7th on team), if anybody, it is Lowell who is the team's MVP.  He is the reason the Sox are winning so much, along with Dustin Pedroia, and the Sox starting picthers, like Beckett, and Matsuzaka.  The Red Sox should continue to do well, and beat out the Yankees, who, by the way are on fire.  Look for Manny and Ortiz to come out hitting HR's in October.

The red sox play the devil rays in a few minutes Boston.

How good are the Red Sox? Pretty damn good. They have the highest winning percentage in the MLB right now.

Very well done. In answer to your question, the Red Sox are one of the three best teams in baseball right now (with the Angels and Tigers, I don't care if they've sucked lately). The number of runs they've scored is very deceiving. There are times when they score a bunch of runs in one game, but more often, they get beaten by good pitching, and can't score more than 2 runs. Matsuzaka should have 15 or 16 wins right now, he only has 13. Clutch hitting has been a problem also, and the power numbers aren't nearly what they used to be. Out of the 5 spot (behind Ortiz and Ramirez), they rank 28th out of 30 in home runs.

That's the main problem with the Red Sox. Like I've said, it's been very different compared to last year. Last year, we had all the offense we needed, but no pitching. Beckett surrendered more homers than anyone else in the MLB. This year, he's probably in the top 3 for Cy Young Candidates. We had almost nothing for a bullpen. Delcarmen has done really well, Papelbon is Papelbon, and we got Okajima. Then, we got Dice-K. Some say he's overrated, but IMO, I don't think he is. Sure, he's not winning games, but that's cuz he's not getting any run support at all. Also, the main reason why the Red Sox are ranked 28th in HRs in the #5 spot is because JD Drew, who has done almost nothing for the Sox this year, hit for that spot for most of the season. But that's OK. There have been a lot of slumps: Lugo, Crisp, Manny, Ortiz... BUT all of them have done a lot better. They all seem to have gotten their swings back, and hopefully that can help the Sox maintain their division lead..

I say we keep Lowell in the 5 hole. He's leading the team in RBIs, he has some pop (did you see how he MURDERED that pitch last night), and he's been the most consistent of everyone all year. Daisuke is not overrated. If you look at the numbers, other than Brandon Webb over the past month or so, he's probably been the best pitcher in baseball since June 1.

Dice-K is essentially an NL pitcher...its stunning that one of (if not the) best offensive clubs in baseball cannot support a defacto Ace like Matsuzaka...

Statistically, Lowell is better in the #6 hole, but we have no choice. And I can't see anything anymore since there's no cable in Kuwait. I'd be lucky if I can watch a baseball game here. All they have is tennis and soccer. But I always wake up or stay up the whole night just to watch the games. Dice-K is definitely not overrated like you said, and he's definitely got some good stuff. Hopefully, we can get him to pitch this well in the playoffs, that is, if we make it. (I'm always nervous about the last month).

As luck would have it, Dice-K is currently getting beat up by the Rays. And Andy Sonnanstine is owning the Red Sox. It's 5-0 in the 5th. I hate my life.

I'm giving you more points, just to make YOU feel happy. I'm thanking God that I'm not watching it. I wish once, just once, the Devil Rays would do US a favor.

Oh, and about the roster, compared to last year, it seems like it has switched around, not completely, but somewhat. Last year, it seemed like Ortiz and Manny did all the offensive work, and the Red Sox were also very good in late inning games and producing runs then. This year, except on Mother's Day and yesterday, I think it's safe to say that they've been about the opposite. It's also different due to the fact that they haven't screwed up or given their lead this far in the season. They have a great bullpen this year, and on the other hand, last year, we had nothing but Jon Papelbon. It's really weird...

The team is good, but come October, they will not be winning their last game of the season.

I was thinking the Tigers would make it again before the season started. They swept the Red Sox the last time they faced them. Angels? We haven't done well against them either (as of late). Yankees? They're a hot team that's just gonna keep on rolling. I'm scared. I mean..REALLY SCARED, come October, we're screwed.

Odds are that it will be the Tigers, but check back with me in a month. An NL team may suddenly get hot - see '03 Marlins, '06 Cardinals. To be honest with you, the Red Sox remind me of the BRaves from 1991-2005. They are a great regular season team, but will be bounched easily from the post-season.

That seems like a good comparison. Only problem is the Braves won the division all those years, Red Sox haven't won a division since...1995.

Do not forget about seattle the red sox have done terrible againest the leaders in the wild card chase when they play at safeco field. Yes its nerve racking to watch. But, winning when your againest tough opponets is better and feels better when they finally will win it all. versus sweeping 3 good but not great teams to win.

Record: most words ever written in one post for Yakob. :P The Mariners are never good in the playoffs. They have never gone past the ALDS, let alone a pennant, let alone a world series. They've only been in the playoffs 4 times, and I don't think they're making it past the ALDS this year, that is, if they make the playoffs.

The Sox will get out of the first round but at this point in the season the angels are better. I expect them to take out Boston in the ALCS.

They may have the best record, but they have nowhere near the best record since 5/31. They were about 20 games over .500 on 5/31 an awesome start for sure. But since 5/31 they are about 3 games over .500, not a good trend. This is why the Yankees have been steadily catching up.

coincidently, there are 162 games in a season...and your record during that whole season is what counts, not 5/31...

Using the everybody beats the D Rays theory cuts both ways. Let's not overlook that 15 of the Yankees first 25 games after the break were against Tampa and Kansas City.
