How do you like the new Armchair GM format?

36

by user PatrickBurke1980

I personally love that the site has more images and the automatic login screen that pops up is great too considering I never sign-in to post. The new format may be a little large when srcolling through comments you can you see a few at a time. The customization of the front page is awesome too. Great job to everyone involved.

I like the new format and its usability...however for some reason I like the look of the old comments better. These green thought-bubble-like things I'm not so sure of and the older comment look I feel was way more streamlined and clean. These jump off the page a little too much and while the aqua gradient look is nice and all for the site, carrying that over to the comments is overkill. The thumbs-up-thumbs-down icons I would lose also and stick with the +/-. Everything else I like, save for the slight downgrade is responsiveness.

Couple things I forgot to mention...before it was very easy to see what was an opinion and what was news. It seems that on this new front page (which I love), it's not as easy to tell immediately. As of right now, they all seem to be opinions actually...is this the way the page is going to usually populate itself? With more opinions than news or is it just coincidence that right now there are no news articles?

ArmchairGM is too American-centric. Sure the website is American based but this isn't ESPN! Why should the North American major professional sports leagues be shown top priority on top of the page? And besides, outside of the world (the United States) most people don't even know what college football and college basketball is!

I personally like the amount, it's not overbearing, and the it's easy to see articles you missed by using the "Next" button at the bottom. My only beef with that, and its being picky, is that if I go three pages deep looking for old articles I missed, after I select one, then go back use the back button, I get sent to the first page of articles and its a pain to have click "Next" to find the group of stories I was looking at.

And I still STRONGLY believe that "New Stuff" should post directly to the front page or it may be forever buried without being given a fair chance to be read. I know we discussed this at length and no one must have agreed, but I must stress this as something I believe to be very important to our community. I can discuss the topic at further length if anyone is interested.

so, you think that most people will not click the "new" tab on the front page to read information? The tension here is that adding a little preview of the article and images spice up the front page graphically and they also help people figure out what they are reading. So, if we added new stuff to the front page, it would be a very long front page. Do you think that scrolling down to the bottom of the front page is better from a users perspective then clicking the new stuff tab button?

A couple minor things:

First, like many have said, I don't like the new comment style. The old look was slicker. Next, I don't like how the MY PAGE box dominates the top banner. It should be the same width as the rest of the banner. Also, and this one's really minor: I don't like how the links are underlined. For some reason to me this looks dated compared with the old look.

Sorry to be nit-picky; I thought the revision was needed and that you guys did a great job overall.

Say I forgot to log-in and I'm on a user page trying to make a comment. I notice I'm not signed in, go to sign in and the new login thing pops up. Is there any way to sign-in and have it just stay on the page you're on? It always brings you back to the main page and you have to go back to whatever page you were on.

From what I'm reading, most people like the new setup. Consenses says that the comment bubbles need to be smaller and 'new stuff' should be visible on the front page. I happen to agree that the 'my page' button is way big and looks out of place.

As expected with any new version of an application, there will be tweaks needed. But overall, it looks awesome. Great job!!

"Not sure how Ajax is all that applicable on this site" -- Dennis - when you click to vote on an article, it registeres the vote without reloading the page -- that is AJAX, and i think that is pretty useful on the site (it was actually using that on the old site too, and alot of other places as well -- including the comments). "Ajax-y boxes" doesn't even make sense, since ajax is a programming technique, and boxes deal with graphics
