How The Media Shifted the Series to Dallas

by user BigPPup

According to a Miami Herald columnist, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban did not just hurl profanity in the direction of NBA officials and Commissioner David Stern. The Herald also reported that Cuban went on to yell, "Your league is fixed," in the direction of the commissioner. Cuban has made no comments regarding whether or not the event happened. As reported on ESPN’s Mike & Mike in the Morning, it appears the Miami reporter only received news of the tirade via a third party source. All of this puts the validity of the statement into question.

More importantly, the comment, true or false, may be the best ally the Dallas Mavericks have going into tonight’s game six back home in Dallas. What was meant to be a small article in a local paper has exploded onto the national scene, and I’m sure that Dallas fans have gotten word of the article via an ESPN affiliate. This means the Dallas crowd will go into the game with a chip on their shoulder aimed at the refs.

The NBA Finals have become a very physical series, with plenty of questionable calls that could have gone either way. When the series began in Dallas, the calls went in Dallas’s favor. Dirk and company were able to get to the foul line at will. Once the series shifted to Miami so did the foul calls. Miami has taken over 25 more attempts from the line in the last three games than the Mavs. That’s why they call it home cooking.

In tonight’s Game 6 the refs are going to be under fire from the moment they take the court. If the game starts to get out of hand in Miami’s favor and there are any questionable calls, you can bet the Dallas fans will be ready to explode. That influence of a hostile crowd will shift the calls back into the hometown team’s favor.

The conspiracy theories have to be flying. If not I’m willing to start them. The NBA needs Dallas to win tonight in order for the league to save face. The only way it is acceptable for Miami to win is if they flat out, out play the Mavs and win by a large margin. If it’s a close game and there are any close calls in Miami's favor, it could be disastrous for the NBA.

NBA refs are human and they hear and see what is in the media. Whatever crew takes the floor tonight will be aware of the Miami Herald article. There’s a good chance they will call the game closer in Dallas’s favor and never realize it, just to avoid looking Miami bias.

Whether Mark Cuban made the remarks or not, the fact they were picked up by the national media will have enough of an impact on Tuesday’s game. That one article may have more of an impact on the outcome of the game and the series than any coaching adjustment or play called.

What's the over/under on Mark Cuban literally murdering a referee after a bad call at some point in his ownership?

Bill Simmons said that if the Heat win, he wonders if Cuban will break up the ceremony, Jack Ruby style. I thought that was witty.

This is an excellent article. There are many, many anecodotal reasons to believe that the NBA is less-than-kosher, and Game 5 is another mark against credibility. But Cuban's underlying point recently is *not* that the officiating is broken. He's now arguing that it's a well-regarded fact that officiating sucks, yet no one has attempted to fix it. Contrast the NFL and the NBA. In the NFL, we hear the league apologizing for bad calls. In the NBA, Cuban (who is probably right, "fixed" comment aside) gets fined and pushed aside.

It's actually great that Cuban has the balls and the deep pockets to have the courage to say these things, because I think a lot of teams have gotten screwed over in the playoffs based on the refs being very biased toward one team or another at any given time.

It's probably not bias, at least not overtly. There are a lot of close calls to be made in an average NBA game, and there's a huge incentive to make them favorably to the home crowd. That's probably much of the reasoning.

That's what I was trying to say. Thanks for stating it better than I could. :)

They shouldnt have called a foul. They never call a foul on the last play of the game. Ive seen worse but for some reason, Wade got bailed out. He was double and then partially triple teamed. You expect some contact, but it wasn't enough to warrant a foul.

According to Cuban's blog, he is denying those comments and questioning the validity of the 3rd hand reference the reporter determined was worthy of printing.

As he should. Who runs third hand quotes? And they say that print media is more reliable than us online folk.

Is the NBA fixed? I think there is definitely predictive power considering good teams normally kill bad teams. Bball is a sport in which teams can have season records of 60+ wins. There are no surprises, but is it fixed? I don't know. I think the Lakers vs Detroit in 2004 was fixed. Shaq was called for illegal jumping at the jumpball like 4x. Do you really think that Shaq who has played like 10+ years in the league doesnt know how to get a jump ball?

I think the reporter Greg Cote needs to be brought in for serious questions. Even I as a blogger would not take stuff to the national media that comes from a third hand source. Also there is good reason to believe that the originator of the source was a clock official of some sort in which case it would be a Miami Heat employee and not a NBA offical.

The Dallas fans would go into game 6 with a chip on their shoulder against the refs with or without Cuban's comments, with or without the media. You don't have to have the facts spoon-fed to you, you only had to watch the game. They blew two calls against the Mavs, then BSed everyone by saying they were "forced" to call the timeout. That's bogus. Coaches and players have said it alike - in a deadball situation like that, the refs have the discretion to give back the timeout, and they do it all the time. No one with half a brain needs Cuban to yell that the series is fixed to think those calls were wrong.

Folks, it is all about the $$ in the NBA. They want the ratings for TV. Hence, they will massage any series to get to 7 game series.
