How Much Longer Will McNabb be Green…With Envy?

I always have liked taking strolls down memory lane, it gives one time to reflect…Remembering certain moments can draw some new conclusions and grant insights that may have been overlooked. Oddly enough, as I peck away at this keyboard, I’m having flashbacks to 10 days ago when I sat of my loveseat, (yes, I said loveseat) watching the Mel Kiper-NFL Telethon…Or as some peeps refer to it as the NFL Draft. A lot of crazy shit happened on that day, didn’t it? The longest first round in the history of the draft, which did anyone really care? It allowed ourselves more time to scratch ourselves on the loveseat, couch, or Lay-Z-Boy. The fall of Brady Quinn, which sorry to say resembled Ricky Martin’s career…Sorry Brady, or is it, sorry Ricky? Then as only the Philadelphia Eagles can do, they baffled everybody by selecting quarterback Kevin Kolb with their first pick in last month's NFL draft.

To say it was shocking would be an understatement, why they even floored Mel Kiper at his own Telethon…Something very difficult to do! Although strangely enough Donovan McNabb had the same reaction that most of us had. "It was shocking," McNabb said Tuesday in an interview on WIP-AM radio. Of course immediately everyone was trying to figure out what the selection of Kolb meant for the future of DM in Philadelphia including the man himself. "When you draft somebody at the position you're in, of course you have questions of 'What does that mean?'" McNabb said. Um Donovan, yeah, simply put, this decision means that the Eagles organization doesn’t see you around too much longer after you did your best impression of one Daunte Culpepper last season. "The most important thing for me is to make sure I'm healthy and 100 percent and get back out there competing and do the right thing on the field." Wow, not only did you shred your knee like number eight, but now your talking like him too.

Look, I know you didn’t shred the knee as bad as Pep did, although you’ve been quite prone to the injury monster of the past few seasons, finishing the regular season on the sidelines three of the past five years. And at 30-years old, well, you’re not a young whipper snapper anymore…The body doesn’t recover like it used to, believe me! I’m 29, and I have more snap, crackle, and pop in my body than Rice Crispies…And all I do is sit on my loveseat and scratch. "I don't think I'm close to the end of my career," McNabb said. "People say when you hit 30, it goes down hill. I think it gets better after that. It's unfortunate I've been hurt the last few years, but things happen." "Gets better," huh? I think wholeheartedly the "the injury monster" would disagree with this assessment, along with oh, lets say…SCIENCE! What, are you going to be the next Evander Holyfield, but sport two good ears? He was "cured" too. It’s time to face the music that after eight seasons, four NFC championship games, a Super Bowl cameo, and a couple "tossing up your pre-game meal" on national televisions that the Eagles are preparing for life after DM because injuries don’t win football games!

Incidentally, Kevin Kolb will do as much for the Eagles as Donovan has done the past few seasons standing on the sidelines in street apparel…Nothing! Kolb’s not the future by any stretch of the imagination. Simply thinking this flabbergastic of a thought is a stretch in its own right! It made perfect sense to cut ties with Jeff Garica then if the Eagles are looking to the future, although if Philly was so concerned about life after Donovan, which they clearly are, um, yeah, ever heard of David Carr and possibly Matt Schaub? Not savvy vets, but two fairly young quarterbacks with a good amount of fair game still left in them. Then again we’re talking about the Eagles here…A franchise that loves to operate like a frog ass! Always water tight! Or if that was never an option, here’s some more food for thought, ever heard of Brady Quinn? You could’ve gotten his services for way below market value…Something that should’ve been appealing to you guys. The Cleveland Browns did…All they did was reach out and touch someone. That someone, none other then Jerry Jones…But of course, the Cowboys & Eagles are rivals, right? They wouldn’t help each other out by making trades, would they? Hmmm, I could’ve sworn otherwise?

So you were in a quarterback market to begin with…Could’ve had the second best "rated" quarterback in the draft, decided otherwise. Instead, selecting Kolb with your first pick of the day…Make perfect sense, yeah about as much as these ridiculously high gas prices. I’m doubting KK was rated higher than Quinn on any draft board. "I think Kevin Kolb is going to do an excellent job for us," McNabb said. "I'm going to try and help him as much as I can. I'm sure he's going to do great. I look forward to working with him this weekend." Well Donovan, please enjoy, the time you will be spending with Double K, (no, not Dice-K…Would that shit please go away!) this weekend…Showing him the ropes. And oh, yeah, enjoy helping him in taking your job over in the coming years, or perhaps sooner, depending on the "injury monster"…That’s what this weekend is all about! For this first step in taking your job from you! Have fun at camp, Donovan…The incumbent has arrived! After all, this is what you asked for in the first place, right? Be careful what you wish for! Although under your tutorage try to leave out, or at least limit the whole yacking bit…It’s not too appetizing!

I think you're way...waaaaayyyy off the mark...and I have no idea where to start but i'll try

1) McNabb's season prior to the injury was MVP like and Culpepper prior to his knee injury was awful. McNabb is better, clearly. On top of that Culpepper's injury was way more serious than McNabb's as Culpepper tore each of the 3, versus McNabb's ACL only. 2) The general consensus that McNabb is Injury Prone doesn't really make sense. If you could explain to me how you prevent and/or prepare for or how anyone is less likely to have this happen to them, I'd be interested to know. Given the exact same circumstances, does anyone else...Break their ankle (yes), Received a Bruised Sternum/Sports Hernia (yes), Tear their ACL (yes). There's nothing you can do for this and any other QB with the same set of circumstances would have the same thing happen. Its not like Donte Stallworth and a bad hammy, McNabb's injuries are the byproduct of playing football. 3)David Carr & Matt Schaub - First, there is no way the eagles trade 2 2nd rounders for a QB to backup Donnie Mac, let alone a starting QB. The draft is the lifeblood of this team, why trade away picks for a guy who hopefully won't even play. Carr, while a possibly a good QB, wouldn't work on this team. Where does he fit, how much does he get paid, how is he useful...and he's 26 (i think). On top of that, the Eagles have A.J. Feeley. Yes, the same guy who sucked in Miami, but also the same guy who went 5-1 for the eagles and needed him for a playoff run. He knows the system (which is complicated) and they know him. THe eagles didn't draft Kolb because they needed a backup, they drafted him because they want a starter later 4) Brady Quinn Sucks. Ok, I said it...he's overrated and people think the browns made a good move by getting him late for a 1st rounder (top 5?) pick next year. Ok...who else took a dropping QB late...Green Bay, and what's Aaron Rodgers doing right now? THe eagles weren't the only ones to rate KK over Quinn (Miami was taking Kolb w/ their second rounder, hence the reason the eagles took him). 5) I'll admit the trade with the cowboys is suprising, but did you ever think that maybe the eagles knew what they were doing. I mean, if you've been drinking the koolaid for the entire andy reid era, you're pretty satisfied. Sure, there are not trophies, but last I checked, this is the most successful period in Eagles History and if donovan gets healthy and pushes them 1 step further, bam, he and the front office are the best ever.

Articles like these just feed a fire of ignorance. I understand your point, but try a little research before you just start rattling things off. KK won't even smell the field this year and more than likely he's an insurance policy for the future. If McNabb plays well for 5-7 years, what'd they lose...a 2nd round pick? Teams have done much worse...and the eagles have survived a loss like this before...

Ugh sorry for the long comment, I just hate when people don't look at the whole story...don't take it personally, I'm just a hawk for my own team...Christof is probably the same way...i'm sure he's got his own points...

McNabb's contact is up for renewal at seasons end...I'm not saying they won't shell out the big bucks...But if the don't I can see him walking. And then what's left? A.J. Feely & Kevin Kolb. And as far as the Dolphins ahead of Brady Quinn, well that holds no value to me considering they drafted a hurt player with their first over pick...Who personally I don't see making any noise. Yeah, they know what they're doing down there! But vaild point

He signed a 14 year contract in 2002...He's not even close...after 2008 (I think), none of it is guaranteed and the eagles own him...

Yeah, I didn't get Ted Ginn Jr either, I agree with you there, but I understand not taking Quinn...If you don't like the guy...plus they got stanton in the 2nd round...last time cameron came close to something like that...Tomlinson and Brees...that worked out pretty well...ha

The Fins got Beck...I think Stanton landed with the Lions. Although if they didn't like Quinn they could've traded down and still got Ginn later, oh well...I got my own problems. I'm a Bears fan!

Yeah, Beck, you're right...all 3 second round QBs are the same to me...but I agree they could have gotten ginn later. I don't think they could have found a trading partner for what they wanted and that's why they never pulled the trigger...oh well not my problem btw, I keep hearing rumors about donovan being a bear next year...that's not true...just a heads up

I'm shocked. Awed. Upset even. The way I see it, Kolb is now in Matt Schaub-like purgatory. He'll be behind McNabb for at least one year, and if the team is even mostly effective w/McNabb, he'll remain on the clipboard indefinitely. Then, he'll be traded to a team like Baltimore.

I see your point, But I'm not sure I would. McNabb's guaranteed phase of his contract ends after 2008 and the eagles have a tendency not to sign/keep guys over 30 (Runyan be an example of an exception). I think the eagles will keep him in '08 for sure, however its fathomable that they will release him in '09 per their standards. However, Andy Reid et al have never had their franchise QB come of this age, so its hard to say what they'll do, there's no standards

Quinn had an amazing College career, and guess what? His best reciever 2 seasons ago was Stouvall, who isn't that great of a WR, and this season, it was Somardjia who isn't playing football anymore. His RB? Walker went undrafted. He had a decent Oline, and a defense with no talent, yet still lead the Irish to being a top 10 team. Cleveland will be much improved this year. 6-10 to 8-8 IMO. As for the Second rounders, I think both Kolb and Stanton have a future. Martz can make John Kitna into a good QB for goodness sake. Martz is to QB's what Shanahan is to RB's. Kolb was a good QB for a lack luster Houston team. I think he hangs around till it's time to decide Feely's fate. They'll decide between the two of them, and keep the other one for a couple more years.

Who'd he beat with that lackluster team? Anyone. Cleveland might be better, but it won't be because of Quinn...Maybe Thomas... Plus, they play the Ravens, Steelers and Bengals twice a year...that's a pretty potential 0-6 right there...
