Back in May, there couldn't have been more hype around Clemens's signing and the $28M contract. How come the million-dollar-per-start Rocket isn't getting more heat as we flip the calendar and head into August? Here are the stats that matter: 3 wins, 5 losses, 4.23 ERA. He's lucky this A-Rod nonsense is commanding people's attention.
In other "why is this not being mentioned" news...Lance Briggs recently signed a one-year deal with the Bears. Isn't this the same Lance Briggs who lambasted the organization and basically said you'd never see him in a Chicago Bears uni again? I know it's all grandstanding and negotiation posturing these days, but it still seems pretty ridiculous. Good news for the Bears, though.
With Glavine going for 300 again on Sunday, the dying breed talk continues. The interesting part of the discussion: Randy Johnson. A year or two ago this guy would have been a mortal lock in Vegas. Now, at 43, and still 16 short it's a long ways short of a sure thing. My guess? He'll gut it out like Biggio just for the sake of the record and then quickly vanish. Some might look at these guys as selfish. Personally, I don't blame 'em. When you've put two decades into your profession and a little ego can help immortalize your legacy the competitor in you has to go for it.
Besides that, loving the NFL season ramp-up. And, yes, there is football this Sunday. Niiice. As a side note, has T.O. out of uniform become a regular training camp visual or is it just me? Owens is becoming the Bonds of the gridiron. He's just tiresome at this point and you can't find a reason to like him.
Have a great weekend, all.
