[edit] History
The Houston Bowl was a post-season college football bowl game that was played annually in Houston, Texas from 2000-05. Initially played at the Reliant Astrodome (2000-01), the venue for the games was moved to 69,500-seat Reliant Stadium in 2002.
The game was first known as the galleryfurniture.com Bowl from 2000 to 2001 and was known as the EV1.net Houston Bowl thereafter.
[edit] Demise
The three-year contract with EV1.net expired on December 31, 2005, leaving the bowl game without a title sponsor. A college football official told the Houston Chronicle that the bowl was in danger of ceasing operations, as a result of the game losing its title sponsor and because the Houston Bowl still owed roughly $600,000 to the Big 12 and Mountain West conferences following the 2005 game.
As a result, the Houston Bowl was shut down. Game operations were given to Lone Star Sports Entertainment, a division of the Houston Texans, and television and naming rights were sold to the NFL Network. The Texas Bowl arose from the deal and replaced the Houston Bowl.
