Woody Williams(0-2) and Paul Maholm(0-2) faced off in the first game of a three-game series. Both starters were looking for their first victories of the season.
Williams plunked Pirates leadoff hitter Chris Duffy to start the bottom of the first. After Duffy was caught stealing, Jack Wilson doubled over the head of the rightfielder. Jason Bay lined a ball just out of the reach of Houston's centerfielder for a run-scoring double. This run would be all the Pirates needed on the night.
Ronny Paulino added another run in the bottom of the second, homering to straight-away center.
In the bottom of the third, Jack Wilson led off with a double down the leftfield line. As he had done in the first inning, Jason Bay lined a double to score Wilson.
After the third inning, both teams were held scoreless.
Paul Maholm went the distance, striking out four and allowing only three hits for his first career complete game and shutout.
Game Notes:
- Dan Wheeler was the only other pitcher to pitch in the game, throwing a scoreless eighth for Houston.
- Craig Biggio had two of Houston's three hits.
- Jason Bay was three for four with 2 RBI.
- This was the shortest game of the season, just under two hours.
