Honestly, God Hates Duke

The Foul Pole

It must be because they are the "Blue Devils".

First it was the men's lacrosse team, now J.J. Redick has been arrested for DWI which for those of you that know what DUI is, DWI is "driving while impaired." He apparently made an illegal U-turn to avoid a license checkpoint in Durham late last night and uh oh, next J.J. sees some red and blue lights in his mirror.

He is scheduled to appear in court on July 17, and you better believe TFP has its calendars marked.

But at least he pulled over and didn't pull a Gilbert Arenas ("You can't arrest me. I'm a basketball player.")

But seriously, Duke, we think it's time to change your name. Notice this never happens at Notre Dame. It's time to become the Duke Gospels According to Luke or the Duke Altar Boys. Something to get on the big man's good side.

Considering their perfect record until the last couple months, I'd say Duke is still an 'angel' overall. Plus, the lacrosse guys are pretty clearly falsely accused and the JJ DWI thing happens at every school in the world... I would say God loves Duke dearly.

Notre Dame also doesn't win NCAA Titles... I'd take those over a spotless discipline record. Especially considering that Redick isn't even on the Duke team anymore...

I don't know about you, but I look down on programs that can't keep their kids in line, no matter how well they do on the field or court. The big schools like Duke accept the undisciplined students just so they CAN win titles. They know they won't have to worry about graduating them because they'll likely leave before four years anyway.

I'll never understand this. You'd think that guys that make a living off their bodies would want to take better care of their bodies. How can athletes drink, smoke and do drugs? Or do one of them WHILE DRIVING!? Seems incredibly stupid. And JJ just cost himself millions of dollars. People were already skeptical about his chances of success in the NBA, and now this. It's one thing to have a super start getting in trouble. But NO TEAM wants a bench player or a starter that makes marginal contributions to be in this kind of trouble.

Let me say one thing about the Duke Lacross team that everyone is overlooking. People are so busy talking about their being falsely accused of raping a stripper that they're not talking about them throwing a kegger and hiring strippers. Regardless of whether they raped the stripper or not, is that the kind of behavior that the university wants to represent it? I think they were right to cancel the season, because regardless of whether they raped that stripper, their stupid behavior at that party caused some serious PR problems for the school. They made the right decision. I wish more schools would do the same thing when players of major sports get caught doing this kind of thing.

Gotta disagree with you. Every university doesn't want to convey that, but 95% of them do. I mean, if you attended almost any college int he USA, you know there are keggers and strippers everywhere, its part of the culture. If you don't believe in special treatment for athletes, this should not be any different

So, Corey, Duke's to blame for the actions of these fools? You think if the Dean had put them on double secret probation or something prior to the events, that would've prevented it? These players are kids. 18-22 in most cases. What do they do? Eat, drink and get strippers.

Rod, I am in college. I am in that age bracket. And I work in college athletics. I know how these things work. If Duke had taken the responsibility to ensure a good name for itself by recruiting kids with character and enough brains, that would've probably avoided the situation. Maybe it's just an ego thing being that they're Division I. They think they rule the world because they got a higher education for free because they're good at something completely unrelated to education. Don't think it's just the players' faults. You're just feeding the ugly NCAA system.

OK, but seriously. Haven't you ever been to a bachelor party with strippers or gotten into the car after having 2-4 beers? Besides that, just look at what's being done in other schools or at the pro level. Players are humans and they make the same mistakes others do. People seem to hold them to a higher regard just because they are celebrities or make more money.

For what it's worth, I can honestly say that I've never gotten in a car after a few beers, and I've never been to a party with strippers. But then, I don't even represent my college through athletics. You have to realize that, being in that position, you are an ambassador for the University, and are held to a higher standard because the University used a scholarship to get you there.

I agree with you there. But I think the article was just pointing out the irony that both these things happened to those affiliated with the same school.

But you called Duke out for choosing undisciplined atheletes. All I was trying to do was to illustrate that it is tough to do that. Especially for Redick's trangressions as his character was fine previously. I suppose you can put a bit of blame for the lax situation, but really. Any college team, especially in a big time school, hosts keggers and takes advantage of willing females.

But why not call them out? In fact, while we're at why don't we call out Miami, Florida State and Virginia Tech right away too. Don't you think it's wrong to brush all these aside as "Oh, it's just kids being kids?" Last I check 18+ is adult. If you can't be responsible while drinking or in your private life then you probably should be called out, as should the school for not controlling their most visible students.

OK, I can agree a little bit more when you bring the other institutions into it. But even still, isn't the spring session over, isn't redick 21 (legal to drink), so tell me what Duke should've done to control that? As for keg parties, are you going to ban all of those, for all atheletes and frats while at it? What do you propose?

Duke probably couldn't have done anything. I just propose the universities take some responsibility and punish these guys without the fear of losing a national championship. After all, that is why they only get a slap on the wrist most of the time. Eventually the bad name catches up to them.
