Home Run Derby: Much Hype About Nothing

The Home Run Derby last night was missing something. The wow factor was missing since nobody really got untracked that much and if they did they did it for one round. Ryan Howard and Prince Fielder fizzled out fast in the competition.

Alex Rios made a name for himself in the second round but didn't make the finals. Even Albert Pujols couldn't make it to the last round. Something seemed to be missing last night. Maybe the derby needed players like Alex Rodriguez and Barry Bonds to make it more interesting.

The worst thing of all is that the derby took over three hours which is longer than some games. There was one game which was only 2 hours and 8 minutes long last week. The derby is interlaced with so many interviews, commercials, promotions of the Bronx is Burning show and frivolous reports from McCovey Cove by Kenny Mayne that it was a relief that the derby finally came to an end.

Maybe it is time to have less competitors and shorten it to two hours instead of the three hour marathon. I am sure people paid good money to see this in the stadium but don't think they got the money's worth. And the people at home watching it for free could have found better ways to spend a July evening.

The Home Run Derby definitely missed something, but it gave a lot of younger players who haven't participated in the HRD a chance to make a name for themselves. Rios surprised everybody. I think A-Rod should've taken the day off that cuz he's playing in the ASG and he's injured. I think he would've participated in the ASG more than the HRD.

We all know that Bonds is a queer. He can hit bombs but he doesn't want to get booed. And he gave such stupid excuses. Did anyone watch his interview with Gammons? That was ridiculous, as usual. So you can count him out.

The man that I think should've participated was the man that gave Vlad the "luck", so to speak: David Ortiz. I guess he wasn't asked because I'm sure he would've loved to entertain the fans in AT&T Park. Big Papi didn't have the numbers that he had in the past. I think he deserved to be in there, but you can't change the past...

Hell of a semi-finals round though, with Holliday, Rios, Pujols, and RAD BAD, MAD VLAD

Rios was a surprise and like the announcers had no idea he was so big. Hard to believe the Blue Jays aren't doing better with power hitters like Rios, Glaus, Wells and Thomas. They are ninth in runs scored in AL and and only have scored 7 more runs than the Rays.

When I edited the names I put them in boldface and linked them and they looked right on screen but when they showed up on actual post they were wrong. What did I do wrong?

Like that? No need for the "Http://" part just put to brackets around each side of the name...and if you want to use the disambiguation you can make 2 brackets the players name a line "|" and then the disambiguation like just his last name... for example Bonds

To make the line ("|") just hold down shift and hit the forward shift key (The one above enter)... Unless you have a mac, then i have no idea...

will try to remember to keep http part of link off the next time...sort of confused about the last two instructions...not that you didn't explain them well...just a case of computer illiterate trying to grasp the meaning of your instructions.

It was pretty much like the NBA Playoffs. Starts out slow, exciting middle round, disappointing finish.

The Derby should be NL v. AL, not individual v. individual. Each league should get 10 batters, and each batter should get 10 swings, for 100 total HR opportunities.

The funny thing is, ESPN always schedules the Derby for a two-hour time block, but it always ends up being three hours. Jayson Stark had some good ideas on ESPN.com yesterday to make the Derby better. I was impressed with Matt Holliday also.

I don't think field conditions were very good for a home run hitting contest last night.

Field conditions were really bad. They should be banned, along with False Prophet.

Rios didn't have a good second round? Did you watch the Derby? Did he not have 12 that round? Pretty good for a leadoff hitter in Canada.

MegE...was thinking the same thing...they kept promoting the shows after the derby when they knew good and well the derby would end an hour late pushing them an hour later. Someone on east coast had to stay up till no telling when to see the end of the last show.
