Holyfield to Face Savarese June 30

Former four-time heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield (41-8-2) continues his comeback on June 30 in Houston, Texas.  The opponent will be perennial heavyweight trial-horse Lou Savarese (46-6) who has fought only three times in the past three years.  This will be Holyfield's fourth fight of his comeback having already scored victories over Jeremy Bates, Fres Oquendo and Vinny Maddalone.

This fight just doesn't make sense for Holyfield.  If he's serious about this comeback, and more importantly if he wants others to take him seriously, he needs to begin stepping up the level of competition.  He needs to fight someone who's at least ranked in the top 15 of one of the major sanctioning bodies.  Even another heavyweight who's trying to get his career back on track like Hasim Rahman would've made sense here.  Lou Savarese is probably not even a step up from Vinny Maddalone at this point and if Evander has any dreams of once again fighting for a title he has no business making this fight.

I figure a lot of it is $ based. Sadly.

Probably. But I can't imagine Holyfield is getting a ton of cash to face a guy like Savarese.

Well from what I hear, Holyfield is very hard hit for cash, so every littel bit helps. On the flipside, who the hell wants to watch Holyfield fight anyone any more?

Of the four current champions the one Evander would have the best shot against is Shannon Briggs. Briggs is often out of shape and has historically suffered from poor conditioning. He looked awful against Liakhovich before getting the late stoppage when both fighters were absolutely gassed. Maskaev, Chagaev and of course Wlad Klitschko simply have too much power for him. It will end badly but not against Lou Savarese who might actually be more shot than Holyfield at this point.

Evander's best shot in the ring might be finishing off Charlie Steiner after what Steiner said about him to Stuart Scott.
