Holds Category in Baseball (Just as good as a Saves)?!?

 I wonder...

Why is the closer’s role more important in baseball than then the middle reliever/set-up man? Why is the save a more prominent statistical category than a Hold? Ask any true baseball fan, who lead the league in Holds last year? How many of them will have the correct answer?

According to CBSsportsline.com: A hold is credited anytime a pitcher enters a game in a Save Situation, records at least one out and leaves the game never giving up the lead. A pitcher cannot finish the game or earn a save and a hold in the same game.

As I read this definition, I would imagine that there are only a select number pitchers with multiple Holds. I would like to think that these people have more value than they are given credit for.  One particular example is Heath Bell of the San Diego Padres. How many people outside San Diego really know him? Sure a lot of people have heard of him, but how many knows just what he did last year? Heath Bell finished the year second in the league with Holds (34) and had an amazing 0.96 WHIP. He also struck out 102 batters in 94 innings. I am sure he was not on many people’s fantasy team, since he doesn’t get the usual Wins or Saves category.

Another example is Jon Rauch of Washington. This is another set-up man with incredible numbers. He finished tied for third in the Holds category (33). John Rauch had an amazing 71 strikeouts in 87 innings. There was word that he may become the closer of the future, yet he is stuck in middle relief innings of the ball game, so most fans did not take notice.

Even the MLB writers and players association drop the ball when recognizing the middle reliever/setup man. The only major award that a pitcher out of the bullpen gets is the DHL Delivery man award. This award has started in 2005 and all three years a closer has received it. Will this be a growing trend for this award,is the closer always a lock for this trophy? The CY Young is another pitchers award. This award is hardly won by anyone in the bullpen. The last time it was won, was in 2003 by closer Eric Gagne.

As I end this article, I wonder why Holds is even counted as a category? Is this just another Bill James way of tracking player information? Is Holds going to someday be as important as Saves? I question all of these things because I feel every ballplayer on the teams 40 man roster deserves respect. Therefore I salute all of the George Sherrill’s of the world.  It doesn’t matter what inning they pitch in, just as long as they do their job.

Side note:

Brandon Lyon actually led MLB in Holds with 35.

Saves is the second most overrated stat in baseball. Holds is first.

I definitely agree with you that saves and holds are the top 2 most overrated stats. I'd switch your 1st with your 2nd though, as far as relief pitchers go (W-L column is probably first overall). I don't hear about holds that much compared to saves. Because of saves, guys like Joe Borowski and Jose Valverde are considered VERY GOOD closers, which is ridiculous.

I always make Holds a category when setting up my fantasy baseball league. But I think a save is tougher to get, psychologically. There's something about the other team being up against the wall in their last chance to win that makes it difficult to be a closer.

The thing about Holds is that they don't necessarily come in victories, as Saves do. They can also be awarded in games that end up being blowouts by the 9th inning. There's also the possibility of multiple Holds being issued in a game, even for different teams.

Saves are a very shallow stat, but it's a sexy stat because of the excitement of the final inning. I don't think we should focus more attention on Holds. Rather, we should emphasize WHIP and other qualitative stats for relief pitchers and less attention on quantitative stats like Saves.

I'd also like to see a statistic for the rate at which relief pitchers allow inherited runners to score.

It is definitely tougher to get psychologically, but that is why teams' managers put their BEST bullpen pitcher in the end of the game. Take Papelbon and Okajima for example. You're definitely right about saves being more important than holds, and you're also right about WHIP. That's the first thing I look at for a pitcher as a matter of fact, whether it be relief or a starter.

I think saves and holds are fine considering what they are working to determine. Real baseball fans understand that a save and hold overall stat can be very overrated, however how do you suppose we keep track of these stats? The bullpen has proved to be an essential part of building a world series champion. And untill we find a better form of measure I guess we must use these. Good stuff skip

The reason middle relievers are great is because they only care about one stat: their team's record...

The middle reliever only cares about his team's record, while the third baseman only cares about his own stats. Um, why is that again?

Because the Yankees pay him 27.5 million to only care about his stats.
