O.J. Mayo has done it again.
The first week of his senior year of high school and O.J. Mayo has tranferred back to Huntington High in West Virginia. Neither the two time Mr. Ohio nor his family is giving reasons and they have kept both Huntington and North College Hill (Cincinnati) officials tight-lipped as well.
This is the second surpise Mayo has delivered to the public recently. The last being his verbal commitment to play college basketball for USC - although rumors are still swirling that he'll jump straight the NBA. He was at times believed to be headed to either Ohio State or Cincinnati and then there were rumors he would go wherever fomer Cincinnati coach Bob Huggins ended up.
Mayo has quickly become the most unpredictible of the new wave of #1 high school basketball players. Mayo should aim to be more like LeBron James, who spent his time as the number one prep player playing ball for his school and did a good job of keeping distractions at a distance.
Mayo, however, seems to enjoy keeping all eyes on himself on and off the court. This, I believe, shows some dark clouds down the path toward his future.
Causing a rukus in the news and trying to suprise the world was the mantra of another certain former #1 Ohio prep star that has ended up finding nothing but trouble. Will O.J. Mayo end up down the same road as Maurice Clarett? I certainly hope not.
High school stars are becoming too much of stars and too little of high schoolers. Kids that young aren't ready for the spotlight and Mayo's going to end up ruining his life if he doesn't stop worrying so much about making every right move to keep the media's attention. He needs to keep his head down, go to class and play ball. He needs to be a kid while he has a chance.
Otherwise, he's going to end up screwing up his career before he even has one.
