A strange incident in Toronto yesterday led to the Blue Jays announcing that they've designated Shea Hillenbrand for assignment. The designated hitter snapped upon arriving in the clubhouse yesterday to find that he wasn't in the lineup for a second consecutive day. It was to be Hillenbrand's second day back with the team after leaving to join his wife in Los Angeles Friday where the couple adopted a baby girl. Hillenbrand complained about the percieved slight, which he claimed came on the heels of no one from the team congratulating him on the adoption, and was then reamed by Toronto manager John Gibbons in front of his teammates. Hillenbrand's take on things follows:
"Not one person from the front office has come up to congratulate me," Hillenbrand said. "Just [other] people have -- like you [reporters]. That's a disgrace....I'm very disappointed about what he did and I find it very unprofessional."
Gibbons and GM J.P. Ricciardi expressed relief that Hillenbrand, who had been a malcontent for most of the season, would be gone from the clubhouse and refuted charges that the team was punishing him for taking time off to be with his wife and new daughter.
Here are some of Hillenbrand's other complaints about the organization:
- No one complimented him on dropping three pounds during a May road trip
- Clubhouse buffet conspicously light on smoked salmon.
- They don't use Charmin in clubhouse shitters.
- Two words: Exchange Rate.
- John Gibbons is not a fan of the novels of Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
- They want me to get a hit, like every time I get up to bat.
- The Blue Jay not a fierce enough mascot - what about the Toronto Killer Bees?
- Clubhouse CD collection has too much Rush
- Labatt's blows.
- Team insists on starting Roy Halladay and A.J. Burnett instead of letting Hillenbrand do double duty.
