Born on April 9, 1888 in Weatherford, Texas, Hippo Vaughn (James Leslie Vaughn) played for the New York Highlanders, Washington Senators and Chicago Cubs over the course of his 13 year career. Vaughn broke into the bigs on June 19, 1908 with the New York Highlanders, and put up a 1.83 ERA in 221.2 innings pitched in 1910, his rookie year.

Most people believe that Hippo Vaughn's best season was 1917, when he posted a 2.01 ERA, won 23 games and struck out 195 batters.
