Hinske headed to Boston

9
Vote

The Boston Red Sox have apparently struck a waiver deal for Eric Hinske, the American League 2002 Rookie of the Year. The Blue Jays will be receiving prospects in exchange; the deal has yet to be approved by MLB.

In Boston, Hinske should be coming off the bench in the infield, but he may also find himself playing in the outfield with RF Trot Nixon out of the lineup until September. Hinske should add some offense to the ailing Boston lineup.

The 69-50 Red Sox are second in the AL East, two games behind the division-leading New York Yankees. The 64-56 Jays are currently 7.5 games out of first.

There was a time when Hinske was the next big thing. Now he's just the next minor waiver deal.

Translation: Hinske did steroids and then stopped doing them. Now he sucks.

Nice one, CPCP. I especially like how the "steroids" one links right to Mr. Steroids, himself. Good work - especially for a comment.

What the....this better not kick Pena from the lineup. He's on my fantasy team! What's with these teams acquiring players they seemingly don't need just because they can? It wreaks havoc on us fantasy owners.

It won't entirely kick Pena from the lineup, but he'll probably platoon. The Sox *do* need a left-handed power hitter; their only lefties right now are David Ortiz, Alex Cora, and the switch-hitting Coco Crisp. Plus, their bench isn't very deep at the moment - they have 13 pitchers on the roster, and three guys off the bunch (that includes Javy Lopez). While he's not a starting pitcher, Hinske does fill a need for Boston.

That would be bench, not bunch. They're not grapes. :)

Thanks for the clarity. For some reason I was thinking Hinske bats righty and just couldn't figure out the purpose of the trade. Being a lefty though, that makes more sense. I'm still ticked off about Pena though.

I think they're missing a prime opportunity. Secretly Jason Johnson is a masher at the plate. He could come off the bench on nights he's not lighting it up on the mound. :-)
