Hey Wagner, Get Your Own Song

by user Pean

For a team constantly in their cross-town rivals' shadow, they sure have a funny way of trying to create their own identity. On Monday afternoon at Shea Stadium for Mets Opening Day, the Mets clung to a one run lead heading into the 9th against the Washington Nationals. The setting couldn't be more perfect for All-Star closer Billy Wagner, who was signed for $43 million dollars in the offseason. As the Nats got set for their last at-bats, Wagner jogged onto the field from the bullpen to make his Mets debut. What song was blaring through the Shea Stadium speakers? None other than Metallica's "Enter Sandman". Sound familar? Mariano Rivera has only been coming out of the pen to mail down games while this song played for almost TEN years now. Hearing this song as a baseball fan should immediately make you think of Rivera and a late inning Yankee game AT YANKEE STADIUM. Hearing this song as a Yankee fan in the Stadium is a special thing because everyone is going crazy as Rivera calmly walks to the mound admist a tight contest.

Do Rivera and the Yankees have "Enter Sandman" trademarked? Of course not. Its a free country and there are no MLB rules that specify what songs you can play in your stadium. However, Billy Wagner and whatever Mets offical that allowed this should be blasted for this. There are millions of other songs out there he could've used -- and don't give me crap about Wagner being a big Metallica fan, I'm not buying it. I guess the Mets really aspire to be like the Yankees afterall. I guess if you wanna be a winner, you should imitate them as much as you can. What's next, the chimes after the Mets score runs?

I think Wagner realized that the Yanks wont be having many late-inning leads this season...and besides, Rivera is over the hill.

It's not about copying the Yankees. Wagner has been using the song for awhile also; I heard it while played for him while he was on the Phils and know he used it as an Astro. If he's been using it since his rookie year (I don't know if he has, but it is wholly possible), then he would have been using it for the same amount of time as Rivera (both started in 1995).

Well, Wagner may have been using the song longer. Wagner was a closer, Rivera was a setup man for Wettland. Did he still enter to Metallica as a setup man. Thats pretty lame if he did.

What do the Yankees have to do with the Mets. Wagner has been using that song for years too. Why should he have to change it?

Look, this whole thing is started because the Yankee fans don't know or care about baseball outside of NY. It is really their ignorance. Wagner has been using the song for years and it is only now when he is in NY that Yankee fans have a problem. He was playing right down the street in Philly, using the same song, and no one heard a peep. Plus, Wagner may very well have been using the song longer than Rivera which would make Rivera the unoriginal bastard who should change HIS song.

First of all who cares, second of all changing the song would be an acknowledgement of Mariano's (Yankee) superiority, so if the mets want to be on the same playing field or pass the yankees they shouldnt change what they do to pay deference to the yankees. Plus Wagner has been playing song just as long as Mo. And its just a song, who cares.

It doesn't matter if they have the same song because when the Mets play the Yankees, the Mets will be in the lead, so we'll never have to worry about hearing the song play for Mariano.

Rob Nenn also used to use it when he was closing for the Giants. During the 1999 season Nenn, Wagner (with Houston) and Rivera were all entering to "Enter Sandman". Its ridiculous to think Wagner needs to change the song he has entered to for at least six or seven seasons because he is now pitching in NY.

Nice conspiracy theory, Pean. I suppose next you'll decide the Mets shouldn't play the Star Spangled Banner due to the fact that the Yankees were playing it first. Perhaps the Yankees should just break off from Major League Baseball and have their own league where they can spend the entire season playing with themselves. Apparently the Yankee fans already spend a great deal of time playing with themselves. Let's Go Mets!

Its not about hating the Yankees, its about the Yankees fans showing their childish side. Its Mariano's song. The Yankees should be focusing on their drubbing of the A's not on Billy Wagner. The fact that Yankees fans are focusing on Wagner instead of their team is pretty sad.

The real Sandman was in ECW. The Mets better worry about beating the Braves for the division and the "New" Yankees need to man up at crunch time in the playoffs instead of arguing over closer songs.
