Hey Sam, Jay's Waiting for a Christmas Card

But make up the quotes? I'd say Skiles better stop playing journalism watchdog and concentrate on fixing his terrible team. If the Bulls don't start winning, those "Kobe! Kobe!" chants in the United Center might turn to "Fire Skiles! Fire Skiles!" - Jay Mariotti

It doesn't get much worse than this in the world of sports journalism.

Chicago Tribune basketball columnist Sam Smith launched a tirade against Scott Skiles a few days ago citing the following anonymous quotes allegedly from NBA coaches :

"I thought they were the toughest, best at sharing, best defensive team we'd play," one coach said. "They were so mentally strong. Not this time."
"They're not spirited," another coach said. "There's something funky going on there. They're not together."
"We trap [ Ben ] Gordon on the pick-and-roll," said a third coach. "There doesn't seem anyone else who can beat you now. I don't really have an explanation."
"They're very quiet on the court," said still another. "It seems only [ Andres ] Nocioni plays with fire and gusto."
"It's almost like they're waiting to get beat," said one more.

Not surprisingly, Skiles was a little more than upset. He was downright angry:

"My only response to that is — if that's not made up and [Smith] actually talked to some people that are saying that — they ought to mind their own store."

Mariotti, of course, rushed to the defense of Smith's cowardly refusal to name his sources while at the same time questioned the integrity of the Chicago Tribune:

Hey, the Tribune does some curious things. I'm still wondering why editors removed "Chicago Sun-Times" from the credit line of an Associated Press story breaking the news of Michael Jordan's comeback with the Washington Wizards. I'm also wondering how the Tribune confused a classy, law-abiding Chicago native, former University of Illinois star Eddie Johnson, for a criminal of the same name last year.

Why even the need for Smith to "protect his sources"? Is this a matter of national security? If these alleged sources are indeed NBA head coaches, why even comment if afraid to reveal your identities?

Memo to Sam, you already know you are in the wrong on this matter when Jay Mariotti is battling in your corner.

This really is beyond idiotic. Only Mariotti would blast Skiles for questioning the authenticity of Smith's sources and suggesting that his coaching peers mind their own business, while in the same hyperventilating breath also accuse the Chicago Tribune of universal wrongdoing itself.

So apparently we should unconditionally accept the back page pundit's Solomon-like judgment that Smith is on the up and up while at the same time distrust the Tribune for being an inaccurate, unethical source of the news?

Stay classy Jay.

How come none of these guys--especially Jay- reference their sourses- they just throw in quotes and don't say where they came from- and you know Jay doesn't get them personally-

Ironic how Facktard always bitches about blogs being unreliable sources of "information" and yet defends a douche for refusing to name his sources while at the same time criticizing Skiles for having the audacity to question the authenticity. Only in Chicago.

most professionals hate bloggers...because we're untrained, utterly biased, have no hidden agendas (they're visable...really visable) and speak our minds... leaves something up to quality...but opinions are clear as day

That's just odd...My experiences have led me to see the days when guys like Howard Eskin or Phil Sheridan would rip Charlie Manuel (Uncle Cholly) for being...well...a bumbling idiot...

But one thing those guys never did was say something akin to "I'd say Skiles better stop playing journalism watchdog and concentrate on fixing his terrible team."

Was Mariotti serious...did he just rip a guy for ripping the media? There are infamous sports cities (Boston, Chicago Philly) with tough media's...but to me thats an utter breach of professionalism...as a journalist you have to walk a fine line of writing what you think, what you see and still not being hated by the players/coaches/team...

Facktard is extremely sensitive towards criticism. Hell, the douche had his wiki page locked down. The guy pulls down half a mill per year over at the Sun-Times by making a career out of personal attacks towards those involved in the local Chicago sports scene. And yet when someone lashes back (ex. Ozzie), look out...

Hells bells, this should be a very HOT topic for a website membership full of young aspiring sports columnists/journalists.

Don't be a gutless windbag like Facktard or Smith. Reveal your gawddamn sources or don't bother with the "scoop".

This is garbage at its most vile.

And Facktard dared to give a lecture of ethics in journalism over at Syracuse.

Eeesch.

Well...i'll never reveal my sources...mostly because i don't have any...

But in this case, I understand why he didn't...the only way you could get another NBA coach to give a quote like that (candid really) would be to give him anonimity...so to get anything of value, you have to protect him...I think it makes sense

of course, if it isn't true, its total bullshit...

then again, to skiles point, this isn't much different than me giving Tyrone Parenting advice...sooooo

Yeah but whatever happened to accountability? It is SO DAMN EASY to shoot one's mouth off under the protection of anonymity. In this circumstance, if the guy is too much of a coward to be revealed then it probably wasn't worth saying to begin with.

there's no way the quote comes up otherwise...

it is easy to shoot your mouth off w/o accountability...but you can't get any type of candid quality w/o it...

its a very fine line...and don't blame skiles for sayign what he didn't but I don't blame smith for using it...

Perhaps the sources specifically told them to keep them anonymous. If you name one of them after that, you'll never have them for a source again.

Yeah but this was hardly Watergate. This was strictly an opinion not divulging top secret intel to bust open a global conspiracy.

Since when do opinions warrant anonymity of the source?

If a head coach thinks Skiles stinks, fine report it. But where is the story without the revealing the source?

IMO - this is an example of cheap tabloidism under the guise of journalism. And that discredits everyone.

You're right. I don't think it's the place of another coach to criticize a coach from a different team, and I don't think it's the place of a journalist to seek out said comments.

I agree with you Corey. Ironically, I don't have a problem that if these comments were actually made that they be printed. I just don't think it is worth printing without the source(s). An opinion without an attached name is pretty worthless in my books.

The thing about an anonymous source is that you need trust. How trustworthy is the reporter or paper? How often are unnamed sources used by said reporter? Really Jut makes a great point, how can you get such candid quotes without anominity in this PC world? But at the same time, I have to question, 5 quotes without a single piece of concrete evidence or at least one named source.

that's the hitch steel...

you'll never get these quotes without anonimity...damned if you do, damned if you don't...

This happens a lot with respect to the MLB hot stove. GMs and personel guys talk about other teams players, coaches, prospects with candid thoughts about how good they are

Hell, SI does this for every season preview for the major sports...with info about how one NFL GM thinks about his colleagues, their players and their decisions, etc

Skiles should be worrying more about his job than Smith's sources. I don't necessarily blame him for all the Bulls. I blame a lot of it on Ben Wallace frankly sucking and Jim Paxson's unhealthy obsession with Kirk Hinrich.

How is it fair for Skiles to be allegedly criticized by his peers (nameless at that) but he himself is not permitted to defend?

Maybe everyone should worry about their own jobs instead of each other's perhaps?

Just asking.
