Hey Rivera...Get Your own Damn Song

by user MetsJetsDevils

For a team constantly in their cross-town rivals' shadow, they sure have a funny way of trying to create their own identity. On Monday afternoon at Shea Stadium for Mets Opening Day, the Mets clung to a one run lead heading into the 9th against the Washington Nationals. The setting couldn't be more perfect for All-Star closer Billy Wagner, who was signed for $43 million dollars in the offseason. As the Nats got set for their last at-bats, Wagner jogged onto the field from the bullpen to make his Mets debut. What song was blaring through the Shea Stadium speakers? None other than the song he has been using for basically his entire career, Metallica's "Enter Sandman". Yankee fans, whose baseball knowledge does not extend beyond Yankee Stadium and whichever small market pitcher Steinbrenner is going to overspend for this year (Irabu, Weaver, Vazquez, Pavano) thought Mariano Rivera invented the song because he has been coming out of the pen to close games while this song played for almost ten years now. Yankee fans were unaware that both Wagner and Rob Nen have been using the song as long, if not longer. While most New Yorkers hear this song and immediately think of Rivera blowing a world series lead and crucial playoff games against the hated Red Sox, outside of egocentric Yankee fans, most other baseball fans, including fans in Houston, Philadelphia and San Fransisco, think of someone other than NY's overhyped, formerly dominant closer.

Do Wanger and Nen have "Enter Sandman" trademarked? Of course not because you can't trademark a song. That's what copyright is for. Now Metalicca as well as some sound engineers somewhere likely do have a copyright interest, but that is a different story for one of Aaron's other web projects. What matters here is that its a free country and there are no MLB rules that specify what songs you can play in your stadium. However, Mariono Rivera and whatever Yankees offical that allowed this should be blasted for allowing Rivera to steal the song that two other closers are famous, outside of Yankee Stadium of course, for using. There are millions of other songs out there that Rivera could use -- Perhaps the Simpsons spoof "Flaming Mo's" would be appropriate. In the end though, you have to forgive Yankee fans for their "Sandman" ignorance. That song is all they have left to remember what was once a good team, but now is a fading memory. I guess if you wanna be a winner, you should imitate winners as much as you can. But no matter how much Rivera imitates Wagner and Nen, the Yankees, and Rivera, will never be winners again in his career.

Here's what you Mets fans don't get. Wagner used Enter Sandman in Houston (shit hole) and Philadelphia (bigger shit hole). Mo’s been using it in New York. Wagner’s the new guy in town, so he’s the one who’s copying.

The Mets are and will always be the #2 team in NY. Even if they win the World Series, NY will always be a Yankee town. The Yanks are the biggest team in baseball. They have international recognition by people who know nothing about baseball, much the way Manchester United is recognized by non soccer fans. Mets fans resent the fact that they are second class citizens and Yankees fans always like to point this out. So to Patrickburke1980, I say the Mets will never own NYC.

The fact that the Yankees are the dominant franchise in New York has nothing to with the right of Billy Wagner to play whatever song he wants.

The Mets OWNED New York in the eighties. Granted, that was a long ago, but they owned the town before and they can do it again.

Yankee fans are so Yankee centric. They act as if they own baseball. But other teams have fans. Other teams win games (especially the series which the Yankees haven't won in a while). Other teams have slumps, (The Yankees had one throughout the entire 80s). Billy Wagner is not copying Mariano because he plays enter sandman. That is the bottom line. And this is not a Yankee/Met thing except to the extent that Yankee fans are ignorant of things that go on in the league that occur outside of NY.

I think Rivera and Wagner should have a pitch off to decide who keeps the song. They each get a bucket of 100 balls and stand mounds length from each other trying to take off each others head or nuts. The first one to die doesn't get to keep the song. If they both die, we won't have to worry about who keeps the song because they'll both be dead.

I bet Wagner would win that contest. Wagner's first throw would knock Rivera's head off, and Rivera's first throw would be blooped into shallow left by Luis Gonzalez.

Quick question because I don't remember the answer. How many teams in MLB history have lead a series 3-0 only to lose the next 4 games and lose the series 4-3? I wish I could remember what team that was and the closer who made it all happen?

Of course it is a flame war btwn mets and yanks fans, thats what makes it so interesting. Who cares what happened in Philly, Houston or with Rob Nen? There is no major rivalry btwn yanks and those guys. It's like if the mets started playing NY, NY after wins or Cotton Eyed Joe during 7th inning. Or had B. Sheperd announce a game. And honestly, I would be pissed if the yanks took any traditions away from the mets. But wait, I can't think of any.

Even though Wagner has been using the song PRE-Rivera, the fact that he wasn't playing in NY somehow doesn't count? How very mature of Yankee fans everywhere! Maybe the idiot that picks out the music for him(Mo is no Metallica fan!) might have checked to see if anyone else was using the song in the MAJOR LEAGUES first; if this is such a huge deal to the Yankee fans, they shouldn't have copied what song r was already using when Mo started closing! Amazing!

April 5, 2006 -- OAKLAND - Mariano Rivera thinks the sandstorm over "Enter Sandman" is silly, funny, strange and more than a little odd. But he isn't angry if Billy Wagner wants to use the Metallica song - Rivera's personal anthem for as long as he's been a closer.

"I think it's funny," Rivera said. "I appreciate the fans' loyalty. But it doesn't bother me."

Rivera admitted he never listens to Metallica, and doesn't have "Enter Sandman" on his I-Pod.

"I listen mostly to Christian music," he said.

"Even if they win the World Series, NY will always be a Yankee town." Wow, you are an idiot. Anyone who knows anything about baseball before 1996 will know that NYC has always been a National League town - first with the Giants and Dodgers, and now with the Mets. Just because the Yanks are dominant in streaks doesn't change the fact that more of New York hates the Yankees than has ever jumped on the corporate baseball bandwagon.
