Herman Long (Herman C. Long) was born on April 13, 1866 in Chicago, Illinois. He made his Major League debut on April 17, 1889 for the Kansas City Cowboys. In 1889, his rookie year, he hit .275 with 3 home runs and 60 RBI. Long played for the Kansas City Cowboys, Boston Beaneaters, New York Highlanders, Detroit Tigers and Philadelphia Phillies over the course of his 16 year career.

There is some disagreement on what was Herman Long's most productive season. Some believe that it was 1892, when he stole 57 bases, hit for a .280 average and knocked in 78 runs. However, others believe that it was 1889, when he stole 89 bases, hit for a .275 average and knocked in 60 runs.
