Here we go again --

[1] What's a football season without hearing from our old buddy Ricky Williams?

According to his attorney, the suspended and enigmatic running back will seek reinstatement after Oct. 1st.

Ricky, who is currently serving his fourth suspention which began in April '06, was eligible for reinstatement earlier in the year but a positive test for marijuana in April of this year delayed his quest for another comeback.

His attorney had this to say, "He sounds wonderful...He sounds like he's in a great place, and I'm confident that will come through to the commissioner."

We'll see.

Commissioner Goodell has certainly been busy in his time in office. From Pacman Jones making it rain, to Vick's federal dogfighting ordeal, to the recent Patriots debacle, the commish's rulings are certainly helping him leave his mark on his version of the league.

Which of course leads you to wonder if he'll even allow Ricky to return.

Goodell seems hellbent on cleaning up the NFL's image, and he might think twice about allowing a repeated drug offender back into his league.

Even more puzzling is where Ricky would play if he is reinstated. Dolphins GM Randy Mueller clearly isn't going to lobby for his return, having sent him to the Dolphins when the two were with the Saints.

Don't look for Coach Cameron to be any more welcoming either. Cam has gone on record as saying (as has former Fins coach/liar Nick Saban) "The easiest predictor of future behavior is previous behavior," when asked about his stance on troubled players. Cam also appears to be enamored with current number 2 HB Jesse Chatman, hinting at a platoon situation with starter Ronnie Brown, so it appears that even if Ricky were reinstated, he wouldn't be wearing the aqua and orange for long.

It has yet to be determined what kind of trade value Ricky would bring on the open market. He's only played 12 games since '04, and although he spent last year playing for Toronto in the CFL, rust will certainly be a issue. He last took an NFL snap in '05, and while he clearly wasn't at his former Pro-Bowl form, he did show flashes of the Ricky of old backing up Ronnie Brown.

Quite simply, no one knows what they're going to get from Ricky, but there is enough potential there to make you seriously think about keeping him on the roster.

Let's go back to that '05 season. In 12 games, Ricky averaged 4.4 yards per carry, scoring 6 TD's and rushing for nearly 750 yards. And while the names today are different, the offensive like wasn't any better then than it is today. He's proven he can work with this line, and can effectively split carries with another featured back.

Why wouldn't you bring him in and see where things go? It's definitely not going to hurt the Dolphins financially, and if it didn't work out, they'd still have Chatman as insurance.

Nevertheless, the Dolphins brass will almost surely gauge other teams interest and end up releasing him in much the same way they did with Daunte Culpepper.

Evidently it's easier to be stubborn and hardheaded than it is to use common sense.

If nothing else, we've certainly not heard the last of Mr. Ricky Williams.
