Herb Gruber (Herbert C. Gruber) was born on December 22, 1901 in Shelbyville, Kentucky. After going to high school at Male (Louisville, KY), Gruber attended the University of Kentucky. Gruber made his professional debut in the APFA in 1921 with the Louisville Brecks. He played in the APFA for 1 year, playing for the Louisville Brecks the entire time. Gruber also played in the NFL for 2 years, playing for the Louisville Brecks the entire time.
