Henry Hill Drops A Bomb On 710 ESPN

For those of you who have been under a rock since the early 80s, Henry Hill is the most infamous American today. Known for being a high ranking member of the Lucchese mob family from the early '60s until the early '80s he is mostly known in the sports world for the Boston College point shaving scandal. Henry's life is the basis of the book Wiseguy and the movie Goodfellas. Since testifying in 11 mob trials including the Boston College and murder chargers against his former friend and associate Jimmy "The Gent" Burke he has moved to California and started several business ventures. This afternoon he joined Steve Mason and John Ireland on 710AM ESPN Radio during "The Big Show" to discuss the current NBA ref scandal.

During the interview they did the usual ask about Goodfellas and Hill's time in the mob questions, slightly interesting, mostly common knowledge if you've read up on Hill's life. Then right before the 1st commerical break Ireland said something that made me punch my steering wheel while driving and yell at the hot blonde in the car next to me at the red light: "Henry has admitted to us before the show that he and the mob had an NBA ref in their pocket - througout the '80s! We'll tell you all about it after the break." I screamed "ahhhHHHHHHH F--K YOU HENRY HILL! F--K YOU!!! YOU RAT SNITCH SON OF A B-IT-H F--K YOUUUUU! Punching the steering wheel in anger I just screamed in pure shock and frusteration. Henry Hill had just admitted that he was ruining my beloved sport over 20 years ago.

When they came back from break Hill explained how he was at the race track every day in the 80s and how 1 ref in particular had drawn a loan from the mob to pay his Horse Racing debts. The ref was also at the track every day and before long Henry and his associates had the ref for 20 to 30 thousand dollars! This ref had more stacked against him then Paris Hilton at Role Models for Young Girls convention and the mob had a way for him to clear his name. Hill went into detail saying that the over/under wasn't important, instead they focused on games with high point spreads. If Boston was picked to beat New York by 14 then the ref would call more fouls against Boston to help New York score more through free throws, thus covering the spread. Hill said that the ref and possibly others that he was unware of were paying back gambling debts to the Lucchese family this way throughout the 80s. Hill was also 'pretty damn sure' that more refs and even a few players could be involved in the current scandal.

Henry Hill is known for a lot of bad things in his life, one thing he isn't known for is lieing. As a matter of fact he has told the truth so many times that everyone he use to work with and for is either in jail or died locked up. I have no doubt that he is telling the truth about the '80s and more information on this could truly rock the history of the NBA. Who knows how many games were affected by crooked refs, but I do know this, I'm fairly sure that Henry Hills honesty mixed with the current scandal will insure that their will never be another crooked NBA game again. David Stern would bet his life on it.

Insan, publicity is a good point, but if Henry really wanted a lot of attention wouldn't he of said this stuff to SI or on Sportscenter? It seemed like Ireland ask Hill on a whim if he had any NBA Connections because we already knew of the Boston College thing and Henry recalled an incident he was directly involved in. If you heard the whole interview, the context of the addmission didn't seem like it was a planned cry for attention. But who knows I've been fooled before.

Not that you could ever have any sport worth the label of "genuine", but if basketball had that label, it's now long gone.

Just a thought but...do you think refs altered the final outcome of a game? And by final outcome, I mean winners and losers. Sure they allowed the knicks to cover against the Cs or something, but was there ever an order like "Boston must win this game" or something? Anyone...thoughts?

Not in NBA, but it would explain why the Yankees (who fundamentally Suck) have won so many World Series...

I don't think an order came down to a ref. The only way to even pull that off in basketball would be to have players on the books, which they did at BC and it worked. But in the NBA Henry was pretty specific that they went after the "high point spread games" beacuse it was the easiest to throw and they could make a ton off the underdog. If the point spread is 10-12 points calling a couple of extra fouls on a teams star so that they have to sit more and giving the underdog a few extra free throws is all it takes. It's shitty that basketball is so easy to fix like that but it's the world we have to deal with.

If he's into the mob for enough money, I could see a ref fixing the actual outcome of a game. What does he care if, late in the season, a lottery-bound team beats a title contender and ensures a few wiseguys a 4 or 6-to-1 payout? And sure, $200-300K/yr is good money, but plunking down $10-20K on it by proxy is an instant, guaranteed 20% bonus!
