Born on December 14, 1863 in Hamden, Connecticut, Henry Gruber (Henry John Gruber) played for the Detroit Wolverines, Cleveland Spiders and Cleveland Infants over the course of his 5 year career. Gruber broke into the bigs on July 28, 1887 with the Detroit Wolverines, and put up a 2.74 ERA in 62.1 innings pitched in 1887, his rookie year.

There is some disagreement on what was Henry Gruber's most productive season. Some believe that it was 1890, when he posted a 4.27 ERA, won 22 games and struck out 110 batters. However, others believe that it was 1888, when he posted a 2.29 ERA, won 11 games and struck out 71 batters.
