Helton waives no-trade, destination Boston

10
Vote

ESPN and the Denver Post are reporting Colorado Rockies first baseman Todd Helton has agreed to waive his full no-trade rights in return for a deal to the Red Sox. In return for Helton, the Rockies would receive Mike Lowell, Julian Tavarez and another player, believed to be either Craig Hansen or Manny Delcarmen, both relief pitchers. There are financial considerations involved as well, including a re-structuring of Helton's current deal. um ok! UPDATE: Looks like the deal fell through, with Denver insisting on both Hansen and Delcarmen.

If Helton plays like he did last year, then this should be a wash. On the other hand, if Helton looks like he did pre-2006, the Red Sox win this one hands-down. Good deal for both teams.

The Red Sox have also advised David Ortiz he will be fined a significant amount if he reports to Spring Training carrying a glove.

What the Helton is going on here? Expect a significant drop in production from the active career batting average leader... still a nice glove, though.

If I remember correctly, Coors (while still being a hitters park), experienced an overall decline in production the last 2 years. I don't think Helton was ever as good as we thought (powerwise), but the guy is a solid contact hitter with a nice glove...

Lowell and Taveres are washes, its the young guns that might end up being costly.

Personally, having seen delcarmen first hand, I think the kid will be good - how good?, i don't know, but major league multiple seasons at the very least good seems fair...

Fenway isn't Coors, and Helton's name has been mentioned with steriods. The Red Sox didn't get him to hit.

Trading Hansen or Delcarmen for a guy who's declined pretty precipitously over the past three seasons? A guy who only OPS'ed .781 away from Coors last year? And giving up Lowell? Not smart, Theo!

Youk moves to third...Helton to first, I would do that in a second

They want to shift Atkins to first, at least until Joe Koshansky makes The Show.

Red Sox are doing what the Yanks did, post 2000. This team will not be a real contender for years to come.

Teams are still negotiating, Helton's contract is one issue and which pitcher (Hansen or Delcarmen or neither) will be included in the deal. The article said Helton waived his no trade to go to Boston but its not a done deal yet.

Yahoo.com is reporting the deal is dead. Colorado wanted both Hansen and Delcarmen, the Red Sox said no way.

I, for one, am glad it fell through, especially if they wanted Hansen and Delcarmen. We don't particularly need Helton, and we certainly don't need to mortgage the future to acquire him.

Kelsdad broke the story/rumor AND squashed it! That's like holding the field goal AND kicking it!!! (Ooooh, wide left!!!) Either way, that was fun!

This is called ArmchairGM afterall!

(Why do deals with Boston always collapse anyway? cough cough A-Rod - I guess this means the Yankees will step in and swipe Helton for less?)

Colorado was right to dump Helton, but they would be nuts to just give him away. Good job by them.

Yeah but realistically what can you get for him? 33 yrs old and #'s in a precipitous decline as eloquently stated previously. Certainly they could not get what they wanted: Lowell, Tavares, Delcarmen and Hansen (even if Colorado chips in $) as we found out today.

As a Sox fan, I'm glad this deal fell through. No way they should be giving up both Hansen and Delcarmen, especially for an aging vet like Helton. The future of the club is in the young pitching.
