Helling Strikes Out Side on Nine Pitches

11
Vote

Milwaukee Brewers' starting pitcher Rick Helling returned from the 60-day DL with a vengence, striking out the side in the first inning on nine straight pitches against the Detroit Tigers Tuesday night.

As simple as the task may sound, the feat had only been accomplished 39 times by 36 pitchers in major league history. The last player to do it? Helling's teammate Ben Sheets on June 13, 2004.

Despite his strong start, the wheels quickly fell off for Helling, who gave up seven runs in 2 1/3 innings in the Brewers' 10-1 loss to the Tigers.

Wow. Striking out the side with 9 pitches is almost as rare as a perfect game. WOW!
