Heisman Watch - Has Troy Smith wrapped it up?

13
Vote

by user Douglasvgibbs

Troy Smith impressed everyone with his win over Michigan, and has pretty much wrapped up the Heisman. But is the race truly over?

Darren McFadden, a sophmore out of Arkansas, leads the SEC in rushing yards, and is considered by many as the best running back to come out of the SEC since Bo Jackson.

Brady Quinn at Notre Dame, to have a chance, needs an impressive win against USC to pull within reach of Smith.

Steve Slaton from West Virginia, and Colt Brennan (the QB from Hawaii) are both very impressive, but will not probably warrant a consideration.

The most talented player in the race is Calvin Johnson from Georgia Tech, but the Heisman is more than just the most talented player, it goes to the player that has the most impact on their team. Troy Smith is that player.

Besides, as well as McFadden is doing, he's a sophmore, and has two more years to seal his bid as a Heisman winner.

But you never know. Things happen. Troy Smith could suddenly get beaten badly and embarrass his team.

Stranger things have happened.

But I think Troy Smith has it, whether the fans of other teams like it or not.

Troy Smith has wrapped it up because of the public opinion campaign by the sports media. They've been touting him all year like there's no way anyone else even needs to be nominated. And he's been great, don't get me wrong. But they're acting like nobody else deserves it, even though Smith's numbers are comparable to about four other QBs.

It's kind of like last year with Reggie Bush winning the Heisman. He had a great year, but he should not have won with that absurd margin. I think he really benefitted from constant highlights being run of his plays, and from sportscasters talking like Bush as if he was an unstoppable force. Vince Young was every bit as good as Bush last year, and they hardly gave him a second thought. I think Vince might have won if the voting happened after bowl season. That's why I think that people should AT LEAST have to wait until all the games are played. Reggie Bush had the Heisman wrapped up in November.

Sorry, I meant to say at least all the regular season games are played. People shouldn't be able to cast votes in the middle of the season. It leads to people giving hasty votes because of a great performance in one or two games (like Bush against Fresno State and Arizona State).

We heard that argument with Michael Vick and Peyton Manning. Sometimes when you go with that argument, players that are truly deserving get totally screwed so that a senior (like Eric Crouch) can win the Heisman.

That's a great point, and I personally think that McFadden deserves it - but he will be passed over. I believe, however, he will be stronger and more mature next year, and barring injury, should be able to pull it off.

Smith has it wrapped up. Sadly though, I think Smith will only take the Heisman because Brady Quinn had that lull back at mid season, and the Notre Dame hype machine finally slowed down. That being said, let Quinn have a big game against USC (ala Matt Leinhart last season) and dont besuprise to see that machine cranked back up into full gear

Smith won't lose it to a bad game. He is done playing until the championship game. Trophy goes out well before then.

Nobody is even mentioning the greatest running back in college. MICHAEL HART.

He was good this year, but is only a possibility due to good luck(Micheal Bush and Adrian Peterson got hurt) and Marshawn Lynch diddn't live up to the hype. He is indisputably the 2nd best back in College, not the first. He will be back next year with a lot of hype surrounding him

I like Steve Slaton, he is a great running back and will be a great back in the NFL. Smith will not be good in the NFL and I wouldn't even draft him, I am not a fan of that style of QB. You build your whole offense around it and then he gets hurt, season over.

What does that have to do with winning the Heisman?

I would just rather give it to a running back like Slaton or McFadden or to traditional QB like Quinn.

If he is similar to McNabb or McNair, or Moon, or Cunningham then he would be fine, but if he can't hold up throwing in the pocket, then I'd agree that he would be a worry

Are you against mobile black quarterbacks based on principle or just racism? A more traditional quarterback? Explain your stance

whoa, I said he would succeed if he was like them. I like QB's that are pocket QB's that happen to be able to scramble well. I'm against QB's that are like "Holly Crap!!! My WR's have Coverage!!! I guess I have to run now" (I.E. Micheal Vick) that are Rb's that happe to be able to throw.

Who mentioned black QBs, besides you? Why would you even say that? Where in your sick demented mind would you come up with that? How sick is that to bring that crap up on a sports message board? I am embarrassed and ashamed for you and don't know how you have those vile thoughts in your head.

I was talking about Tartan not you. I also like pocket passers that can roll-out, not a rb at quarterback.

You mention that you don't like the style of quarterback that Troy Smith plays. This obviously means you haven't seen Troy Smith play if you're comparing him to Michael Vick and the like. He completes passes at a high percentage, doesn't throw interceptions, and uses his feet to buy more time, not run. Through the faulty logic you used to equate them, the only way I could find them similar is their skin color, hence the racism. Troy Smith is exactly what you described, a pocket passer that uses his feet to buy more time. Earlier in his college career, he was a run more guy, but not anymore. I'm even typing this as I'm watching Brady Quinn run the ball for a first down attempt. Watch the game instead of looking at pictures and reading stories

I said If for both cases, and calling someone a racist is not the way to go, and yes you did. "Are you against mobile black quarterbacks based on principle or just racism?" You even use the word racism in your post. I would have said "if he wasn't a run first QB then I'd say he wouldn't be a worry" but if you read the post again, I was dissagreeing with the Af comment saying he was a worry. And you tell ME to read the posts and think before acting rashly...

The fact that you compared Troy Smith to only black quarterbacks shows your false grouping of people based on race. Brady Quinn (a white QB) had more rushing attempts this year than Troy Smith (a black QB), however you grouped Troy Smith with rushing QB's even though he's a pocketpasser. I've seen this happen on many message boards. NFL black QB Byron Leftwich can't run to save his life but everybody always compares him to Randall Cunningham (a black QB that can run). This is done sub-consciously by all people whether you agree or not.
