Heinie Benkert (Henry W. Benkert) was born on June 30, 1901 in Newark, New Jersey. After going to high school at East Side (Newark, NJ), Benkert attended Rutgers State University of New Jersey. Benkert made his professional debut in the NFL in 1925 with the New York Giants. He played for the Newark Tornadoes, Orange Tornadoes, Pottsville Maroons and New York Giants over the course of his 4 year career.
