Heiling Hitler in Czech Republic will cost you $10,320

The Czech Football Association has fined Sparta Praha midfielder, Pavel Horvath, 200,000 crowns (roughly $10,320) for doing what appears to be an arm gesture awfully reminiscent of the Nazi salute. The Czech International's action was caught on film during his club's match with Zizkov.

During the disciplinary commission of the CFA's hearing, they brought in a extremism expert who concluded that he doubted the player did it for no other reason than to entertain the crowd. So making a salute that hearkens back to the days of violence, torture, death camps, war, murder, and fascism, is entertaining? Interesting, though I have heard that Goebbels was quite the comedian.

Horvath's response? "I again stress that the whole gesture was unfortunate... and that it was not meant as a Nazi or racist gesture." The club has announced that it will not appeal the fine.

Of course, critically:
  • Czechoslovakia doesn't exist anymore, and hasn't since 1992.
  • Hitler just walked into Czechoslovakia without anybody doing anything to stop them - still a saw point to this day. The Czechs have very good reason to be particularly stingy. It's seen as almost a national disgrace. Thousands of Czechs were massacred.

You would have had to move the page (drop down the list where it says edit) and just rename the page. So that you know in future!

An old war joke from over here... When Britain drops bombs, Germans take cover. When Germans drop bombs, British take cover. When America drops bombs, everyone takes cover.

I think the joke was spawned by the fact that you ended up killing more of your own troops than Germans. Or so legend has it. Not certain on that.

The American contribution was brilliant. Still, we owe it to the Soviets... Tragically...

Alex, have you ever read any John Toland? I've read 'the last 100 days', he writes about how the Germans were literally running toward the Americans, risking getting mowed down by gunfire, just to avoid confronting the Russians because of all the revenge the Red Army was exacting on the German people for St. Petersburg. The Russians cared not if you were man, woman, or child, if you were German, you were at fault. Gruesome stuff.

Indeed. The Germans were running from the SOVIETS of course... They got to the point when they had nowhere else to run.

This incident is reminiscent of the time Paolo Di Canio saluted the Lazio fans in a similar fashion.

The funniest thing about that, Pittsburgh, is that Lazio was the only club not to give into the fascist Italian regime during the early 20th century and combine with the other three major clubs in Rome. That club today is known as AS Roma.
