Heat rookie center making noise in the summer leagues

We do not know for sure if Alonzo Mourning is going to return to the Miami Heat for next season. The decision may become easier now.

Heat rookie center Earl Barron has become one of the big stories coming out of the summer leagues averaging 22 points and over 7 rebounds. He has shown an ability to play in the low post and hit the 15 foot jumper consistently.

Plus, he shot over 88 percent from the foul line. Shaquille O'Neal is apparently taking notes. Look out for Earl Barron in the coming months. The Miami Heat as well as the various scouts in the summer leagues are very high on him.

I don't think the Heat has any say in Zo coming back. It's purely his decision. He's earned the right to say if he comes back or not, summer league phenom or not. The Heat won't tell him he's not welcome.

The Heat have no say. As much as Mourning has done for them, they would not dare have any say.

I don't think summer league is a real measurment of the caliber of these teams. If it was, then the 5-0 Houston Rockets, and the 4-1 New York Knicks, Denver Nuggets, and Sacremento Kings would be the best teams in the league.

And Bo Outlaw had a 23 point game. And Penny had two 8 assists games. The summer league is weak. Preseason will be a better indicator of Barron's talent.

Earl Barron isn't a rookie; he spent last season with the Heat (much of it in the D League). Barron played well in summer league last year ( http://www.n..._050714.html ), but it didn't translate into much regular-season action.

Every year there's a player or two who look great in summer leauges. It doesn't mean a whole lot.
