He's Back: Schilling, Sox Agree to One-Year Deal

13
Vote

On Tuesday, Curt Schilling and the Boston Red Sox finalized a one-year contract that will pay Schilling $8 million in base salary and possibly millions more in incentives.

The deal hinges on Schilling, 41, passing a physical. It contains $3 million in performance bonuses based on innings pitched and $2 million in weight-related clauses. On his blog Tuesday, Schilling wrote that bonuses are tied to six seperate weigh-ins.

Schilling has helped the Red Sox win two World Series Championships in the last four years. He went 9-8 with a 3.87 ERA during the 2007 regular season, and went 3-0 with a 3.00 ERA in four starts during the playoffs.

Not as much as A-Hole & Jeter. I found an interesting pic of those two but I'm pretty sure False Prophet wouldn't approve. And I definitely know that MJD would have a major spazz.

Bad move, he's done and won't successfully finsih the conversion he started from a power pitcher to a finese pticher. Once he plays bad his ego will go head to head with the boston sports media. There are comparable guys available for less money, less risk to clubhouse chemistry, and more long-term upside potential. I thank him for all he's done, but it's time for him to play elsewhere.

The guy once played with a tendon stapled to his friggin' bone to help his team win? What kind of clubhouse chemistry are looking you looking for? Jeter & A-Hole together in the showers?

True, but Theo got him for considerably less than market value, so it's not a big deal. The incentive structure of the contract means that if he becomes ineffective it's even less of a problem in financial terms.

His ego has been an amazing motivator for all the HOF things he has done for Red Sox. But when he starts pitching bad and the talk radio guys start saying he's old, he's done, re-signing him was a mistake, then he will call into them and you'll hear about it on ESPN. Once it's on ESPN, it will become a distraction because the talk radio guys will only talk louder which will make him call in more. At some point Tito or Theo will have to get involved and it's downward spiral into bad things. I am not saying anything about what he's done, it's about what I think will happen this year.

This is great that we got Schill back, but we still need another solid starter like Bartolo Colon or Jon Lieber or something to solidify a possibly inconsistent starting rotation of Beckett, Schilling, Matsuzaka, Lester, and either Buchholz or Wakefield.

I wrote a couple of months ago about how Boston didn't necessarily need to bring him back, and that I wouldn't mind if he left. But I feel like it's a win-win situation for both; Schilling wanted to stay in Boston with his family, and the Sox have another starter so they don't have to start the season with Clay Buchholz in the rotation. He's a glue guy in the clubhouse, and you can never have too many of those.

Schilling gets to play one more year in Boston and then can quit. Maybe he is planning on opening a little bar to hang out with his pals. You know what I mean. The kind of bar where everybody knows your name....

Even though he's not in his prime, I'm glad that Curt Schilling re-signed with the Red Sox for some reason. Welcome back Schil...

The best part about Schilling staying in Boston is knowing he won't be in Arizona, or Philadelphia or New York or Tampa or San Diego or...... Boston and Schilling deserve each other.

ARod and Schilling are both assholes. Let's go to the tiebreaker. New York is a better city than Boston. I win again.

Wakefiled is 50/50 on being able to come back so that spot may be open. That and after this season we've seen the need for having 6 starters even if you don't go with a 6 man rotation (which would be silly, there's hardly enough pitching as it is)
