Hawk Hope

Summer League in the NBA has to be the most over analyzed, unimportant event in sports. At least a spring training hitting slump can carry over into the regular season. Or a Michael Vick like injury could happen at any moment in a pointless NFL preseason.
But the nba summer league has people actually asking if Nate Robinson can succeeds as a taller, poor man’s Spud Webb in this league.
It makes no sense. I mean you can foul ten times in a game. What other professional league changes the rules for a part of its season? Can you imagine this in the NFL? Yea, rookies need to learn how to tackle so we are going to let them have personal fouls without penalty during preseason.
And I love it. I love knowing Sheldon Williams is not going to average 20 and 10 but having a glimmer of hope that he will. I live on the glimmer of hope. That hope of seeing David Stern and Paul Allen with this same terrified expression as Kevin Durant goes down with a season ending injury on someone’s eighth foul. I love that the players do not wear real uniforms or that the head coaches don’t even coach (this could explain the hawks being over .500 so far.)
The whole thing is like believing in an NBA Santa Claus. Nothing adds up. It can’t possibly be real. But who is going to turn down presents of hawks hope. Not this guy.
