Team History
The Harrisburg Senators started in 1987 as a AA minor league team with the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. The team won everything in its first year in the Class AA Eastern League (league champions). In 1991, the team joined the Montreal Expos organization, and won the league championship as an affiliate of the Expos in 1993, 1996, 1997, 1998, and 1999. The team was bought by the city in 1996 to keep it from moving. In 2005 the Expos became the Washington Nationals, and the Harrisburg Senators became an affiliate of the Nationals.
Baseball in Harrisburg did not start in 1987, though, but back in 1883 when Harrisburg hosted a minor league team with the Interstate Association. That team folded in 1884. In 1890 (Atlantic Association; and 1889-1890 the Harrisburg Ponies played in the Middle States League), 1893-1895 (Pennsylvania State League - team apparently called the Senators), and in 1900 (Atlantic League), the city fielded minor league teams that started playing ball, and then quickly folded. Baseball returned in 1904, and Harrisburg joined the Tri-State League, a Class B league, as the Harrisburg Senators. The team would stay in operation, this time, for 11 years, winning two league championships (1912, 1914), but the league and team disbanded in 1914. Immediately thereafter, though, in 1915 a team from Newark finished out their Federal League scheduled games in Harrisburg. In 1916, Harrisburg hosted a Troy city franchise that stayed until 1917. The Senators name returned in 1924 as a member of the Class B New York-Pennsylvannia league. This Senators team won the league championship in 1927, 1928, and in 1931, before disbanding in 1935. Baseball returned, yet again, in 1940 just in time for WWII. This Senators club played in the Class B Interstate League from 1940-1942, and then from 1946-1952. Then baseball left Harrisburg for thirty-five years, and returned in 1987, as mentioned above.
