Harold Hill

Harold Hill (James Harold Hill) was born on December 8, 1914 in Gadsden, Alabama. After going to high school at Etowah (Attala, AL), Hill attended Howard College, later renamed Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, where he earned accolades as a Little All American. Hill made his professional debut in the NFL in 1938 with the Brooklyn Dodgers. He played for the Brooklyn Dodgers for his entire career. He suffered a back injury and did not complete the 1941 season. Hill entered the U. S. Navy in 1942 and taught swimming and life saving to Navy recruits. During the war, he played on several Navy All-Star football squads which toured military bases playing local teams as part of the Navy's morale building program. Married to Velma Arnold in 1941, after the war Hill joined the George F. Wheelock Company, a mechanical wholesaler located in Birmingham, and worked there until bis retirement. He died in 2004 at the age of 89.
Most people believe that 1939 was Harold Hill's best year.
