Hark Bostonians: The Apocalypse is Upon Us

12

by user Ron Sen, MD

Has the apocalypse come upon us?

Boston fans have a reputation for sophistication, and a mean spirit. Maybe we're not Philadelphia fans booing Santa Claus, but we've had more than our share of negativity moments. Local fans tend to have the cannibalistic maternal instincts of a new hamster mother. Nitwit radio dominates the airwaves, with the morning princes (Dennis and Callahan) formerly suspended for racist remarks, leading the sarcasm. Callahan remains on the DL with a laryngeal problem.

But maybe a new day has dawned for Bostonians. Surely an eleven game cushion in the AL Least helps, but as surely as Turdus migratorius signals springtime, recent events make you wonder.

This week, fans joined a disabled singer, struggling to find his way through the National Anthem. Their voices supported his, allowing him to recover and complete the anthem prior to the Sox game.

Later fans encouraged (note: did not cheer in derision or mock) struggling shortstop Julio Lugo, who then delivered a key single to plate a pair of runs against Red Sox nemesis Scott Kazmir. Not another summertime Kazmir sweater for Bostonians that night. Lugo, mired below the Mendoza line amidst a slump of biblical proportion, seemed genuinely touched by support.

What we'll need to watch for is the "Yankees Suck" cheers, shirts, hats and buttock tattoos disappear from our midst. When class and sophistication replace crassness, vulgarity, and boorishness at "America's Most Beloved Ballpark", then we'll know the Parousia awaits. I'm not holding my breath.

That is so great. I haven't been watching any of the games as of late, but I have met some very loyal, and "unbiased" Red Sox fans, so to speak. I've also seen a bunch of Red Sox fans who just say that the Yankees suck and don't care about the game, at all. I think the Yankees are the same way as well: a lotta bandwagoners, and people who just try to diss anyone else who's different from them, and then you have some of the best, loyal, greatest fans for the NYYs. Both types of fans, Yankees and Red Sox fans, have showed some of their "real traits". For example, booing ARod, and chanting things against the Red Sox. There's all this controversy for what? It's good to see that both Yankee fans AND Red Sox fans have started to show "role model" skills, so to speak, since those are two major teams that are talked about all the time.

For the record...you have no idea why we booed santa... And if you'd like...I'll supply pictures of my view of quality boston sports fans and their sophistication (otherwise known as riots in 2003 and 2004...for both the pats and Sox) - Yep, i took them myself...

It didn't write about the story, you can find it in the Great Phildelphia Fan Book...which should be required reading for philly sports fans...Gargano is a good writer...

Anyways, if my memory serves me correctly...The original santa didn't show up that day during the end of a very crappy eagles season. Fans were already a little peeved at the team and the cold/wet weather didn't help either. But during half-time, no santa appeared as promised...Franklin Field personal had no one in their crew in fill in, so they found a poor fat drunk man in the stands and asked him...before he knew it, we was dressed in red garb (found in the stadium earlier, as the real santa was to provide his own suit) and no beard...this santa walked out at the half, visably drunk, very deshelved and...basically not looking like santa this side of a decent beer gut and a red jacket was lustily booed...and deservingly so...

That is why santa got booed...and if you don't believe me, read the book, they interviewed said santa claus...

Also, according to christof (once again, not taking credit)...Santa came out and threw candy, however he couldn't read the crowd and they booed him...that santa was related to eli manning...

At first I thought the link to turdus migratorius was going to link to Johnny Damon. Then I read the rest of the sentence.

Gotham, Metropolis, the Big Apple...capital of commerce, home of Wall Street.

But when New Yorkers need an education, where do they send their children?

Boston. After they get past the accent, the rest comes easier.

The man with the icon of Calvin peeing and who is an OSU fan has the nerve to call anyone else unsophisticated... There needs to be an element of healthy skepticism and negativity to being a Red Sox fan. I was at the game tonight and JD Drew drove me to apoplexy. If you remove that, we become Cardinals fans (shudder).

And yet...I've had friends where them to fenway on numerous occasions...

I live literally about 1/2 mile from Fenway park and if you think the "yankees suck" jeers and red sox nation have calmed down 1 bit, you're mistaken...

Real sox fans are beside themselves and confused..."red Sox nation" - otherwise known is idiot college girls with terrible accents and pink sox hats think the sox have already won the world series...they disgust me as sports fans...and a large chunk of boston is that way...

Yea I figured the rule was lax. When I read about it, I was doubting that they actually checked and made the fans turn their shirts inside out. It would probably start a riot...
