In a totally unexpected move Mike Hargrove resigned as manager of the Seattle Mariners in the middle of a seven game winning streak and with the Mariners only four games back of the first place Angels in the AL West. Usually if a manager resigns it is in the middle of a long losing streak.
Hargrove does get my respect for being truthful and not hanging on for the rest of the season when the passion to manage is gone. He more than likely will be giving up thousands of dollars for not managing the rest of the season.
His honesty will give John McLaren a chance to manage his first major league team. It will be interesting to see if this change affects the Mariners team as they try to battle for the AL West title. This team has an excellent chance to win the AL West especially if Felix Hernandez can regain his early season form when he was a dominating pitcher.
Mariners have four hitters with chance to have 100 RBI's this season with Raul Ibanez with 49... Richie Sexson with 48... Jose Lopez...44 and Jose Guillen with 43. Next is Ichiro Suzuki with 39 leading disappointing Adrian Beltre with 32 and tied with Kenji Johjima also with 32.
With 4 games left before they play their 81st game which is halfway mark of season this team is bound to hit but pitching could be a problem with only Miguel Batista with 8 wins and Jarrod Washburn with 7 wins the only pitchers with more than 5 wins and the pitcher with 5 wins is not even a starter but a reliefer in Eric O'Flaherty.
Felix Hernandez and Horacio Ramirez are next with only four wins. Not exactly a good matchup in head to head matchups with the Angels who have four starters with six or more wins.
