Happy Birthday, Merv Rettenmund!

About fifteen years ago -- probably longer? -- a computer game for DOS was my mainstay pasttime. The game, PRO MANAGER (which must be in caps!), was a baseball simulator. By modern standards, it stunk. Nevertheless, in writing this, my heart skipped a beat, as I found a place to download it!!!!! Yes, that deserved five exclamation marks.

PRO MANAGER allowed you to build your own teams, and, indeed, you could enter in your own stats. I made a team involving myself, my two brothers, and three of our cousins. We rocked. We were so good that Babe Ruth, whose 1927 persona was added to the team, sucked in comparison.

Why'd I add Ruth to the team? It takes a long time to enter in new players in PRO MANAGER, and I was lazy. Six took the better part of an hour. So, when one of my aforementioned cousins wanted to make a team (the "Trumps," after his then-idol, the Donald), I insisted that he use a few "filler" players. One such player was selected solely due to his snazzy name.

So today, on your 63rd birthday, I and my PRO MANAGER playing childhood salute you.

Nothing was better than PRO MANAGER. I think I'm going to give that site $4 tonight.

I'm only 26 and I still remember playing stuff with DOS. My first computer sucked so hard that I actually had to program my own games.

Yes, he did. That was part of the joke. MERV RETTENMUND strikes out. MERV RETTENMUND doubles. MERV RETTENMUND singles. If you're still not convinced, try to remember the other two players on The Trumps. As for our team, we had The Babe, Mickey Mantle, and Tim Raines.

Speaking of baseball simulation games - Strat-O-Matic must be considered the King! It involves players' cards and dice and now comes in a computer version. Highly recommended - unless you are 14 years old and have homework to do. Speaking from experience, homework ranks a distant second in that particular matchup!

Strat-o-Matic? [sing-songy]Groundball to shortstop! Catcher's Card X! And that retires...the side!][/sing-songy] I've actually never played the game but DNL would have me believe that such cantellations are a necessary part of the game.

Hi Merv,

Fred Daniel Shook here. You may remember me from the very early 70s. I was Dapper Dan boy in Cumberland Maryland. You were a guest of honer and you promissed me tickets to the world series if you went against the Pirates in the early 70s during the world series. You did keep your word. You told me two tickets would be waiting at the gate for me. During this game you hit a 3 run homerun ! You were asked later by the press if you thought about me when you hit the homerun. You were honest enough to say no, "but I am sure it made him happy". It did. Thank you for being the person you are. I will be forever thankful.

Sorry Please comment !, posted by Anonymous Fanatic on 2006-06-19 13:22:11 ? Ask Merv if he remembers me. I am sure he will confirm it. I was in the locker room before the World Series game and met all the guys and Merv gave me a baseball signed by all the players who were present. Merv, work on your web site partners. I just wanted to thank you for your help in the 70s. My uncle name was Bud and my Aunts name was Dolly !
