Hanging With Chad

A report in today's Newark Star-Ledger says that the Jet quarterback competition is over days into training camp. The winner? Chad Pennington, who looks to have retained his starting spot despite his twice surgically repaired shoulder and competition from three other quarterbacks. A team official, speaking anonomously because Eric Mangini isn't ready to make a formal announcement said that Pennington has surprised the organization with his arm strength and accuracy, easily outdistancing himself from Patrick Ramsey.

"We're surprised at the progress he's made," the official said. "No one expected him to be this far along this early."

It's no doubt a strong sign for Pennington's rehabilitation that he's showed enough to win the job so quickly. With a young, inexperienced offensive line and questions about how much the iconic Curtis Martin will be able to produce this year, a steady hand at quarterback will help the Jets regain their footing in the NFL much quicker than if they'd gone with rookie Kellen Clemens while Ramsey's unfamilarity with the other Jets, if not a playbook that's new for everyone, make it all the better that Chad is back under center. It's not so hard to turn back the clock and remember when Pennington was considered a rising star among the league's QBs, perhaps lightning can strike twice for the hard-working Marshall grad.

Edited to add, ESPN.com is running a story contradicting that of the Star-Ledger, saying that the QB competition is still wide open Wednesday afternoon.

Yeah, I agree Manny, I cant believe he made that much progress so quickly. This makes me think of two things 1)maybe part of why he is starting is that massive contract he has. 2) This status will change very very quickly after he has to make one hard pass downfield, or takes a hit.

Yeah, the contract plays a pretty major role in making this decision. I think Chad deserves the first shot behind center but I wouldn't be surprised to see Ramsey and/or Clemens as a starter before the year is out. Whoever it is will likely have to be adept at taking a hit because of the o-line. If Pennington can stay healthy and resume where he left off as a heady game manager, it's an important building block for 2007 and beyond.

I hope Pennington can stay healthy this season. I am not a Jets fan or anything, but it is hard not to root for such a talented player.

Is he really that talented though? I liked Chad at Marshall and with the Jets, but have never been sure that he was much more than an above average QB. His arm has always had questions surrounding it.

Chad is a very good QB. He is not going to win you the game with his rocket arm, but he is extremely accurate and can make the long pass when needed. I have always expected him to win the starting job. He has had plenty of time to come back from his injury of last year and is a hard worker and has a lot of pride. Whether he lasts a whole season is something else...

Go figure the ultimate Jersey fan would love Chad... JK.. In all seriousness though Chad is one of those players I want to like and support but Ive just gone back and forth on him so much. I have a hard time liking players who are so injury prone.

Hate to squash this report, but when Eric Mangini was asked by the New York media today he said that the quarterback competition is still on. Another rumor gone awry. Why are we turning into Fox News?
