Hamp Tanner (Elijah Hampton Tanner) was born on October 31, 1927 in Nichols, Georgia. After going to high school at Lanier (Macon, GA), Tanner attended the University of Georgia. Tanner made his professional debut in the NFL in 1951 with the San Francisco 49ers. He played for the Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers over the course of his 2 year career.

Most people believe that 1952 was Hamp Tanner's best year.
