When there is no ice hockey in Canada, it is time for CFL Thursday Night Football. Tonight matched the Hamilton Tiger Cats visiting the Montreal Alouettes. But, I am sorry to tell you Hamilton fans, Montreal is still undefeated. Final score Hamilton 21 - Montreal 27.

Early in the first quarter, Hamilton looked good. First, they forced a safety. Second, CB Jykine Bradley picked up a fumble by RB Kerry Watkins to return the ball to the Montreal 33. That was immediately followed by a pass from QB Jason Maas to RB Josh Ranek, who ran it in for a touchdown and an early Hamilton lead, 9 - 0.

The seemingly rusty Alouettes, after a bye last week, slowly marched the ball down the field. The team used a little seen trick play, a triple reverse, effectively to advance the ball to the Hamilton 7. Followed by a pass from QB Anthony Calvillio to SB Dave Stala for a touchdown.

At the end of the first quarter, the score was Hamilton 9 - Montreal 7.

Montreal briefly took the lead early in the second quarter with a 39-yard field goal by K Damon Duval.

On the next Hamilton posession, they managed to get the ball to the Montreal 43, but opted to punt the ball instead of going to the sometimes shakey kicker Jamie Boreham. The punt was mis-handled by rookie RB Ian Smart and recovered by DB Tay Cody on the Montreal 10. Hamilton had to settle for a Boreham 17-yard field goal.

Boreham then kicked two other field goals in the quarter, from 13-yards and 32-yards, to finish the first half with Hamilton leading 18 - 10.

In the second half, a Hamilton punt was blocked by HB Chip Cox, then picked up by Montreal LB Patrick Dorvelus for a 45-yard return for a touchdown.

Duval kicked a 33-yard field goal to finish the scoring in the third quarter, giving Montreal a 20 - 18 lead.

In the fourth quarter, Hamilton drove the field but then turned the ball over on downs on their own 50. Calvillio led his team down to the Hamilton 13. On the next play, Calvillio scored on a bootleg to give Montreal a 27 - 18 lead.

Boreham finished off the game scoring with a 21-yard field goal.

Final stats Hamilton. QB Jason Maas was 21 of 39 for 278 yards with one touchdown and zero interceptions. Mass also led the rushing attack with 4 rushes for 28 yards. WR Craig Yeast led the receivers with five receptions for 82 yards. K Jamie Boreham was 4/5 on field goals and 1/1 on extra points.

Final Montreal stats. QB Anthony Calvillio was 21 of 38 for 195 yards with one touchdown and one pick. RB Robert Edwards had 15 rushes for 79 yards. WR Kerry Watkins had six receptions for 67 yards. K Damon Duval was 2/2 on field goals and 3/3 on extra points.

What kind of ratings does the CFL get, as compared to the NHL in Canada?

After looking like the league would fold only a few years ago, due to poor tv numbers and record low attendance numbers (during the US team years), the CFL is on the rise. The CFL is being seen as a true Canadian sport, now. This has caused an explosion in league attendance numbers and a significant jump in tv ratings. TV ratings were up 13% in the regular season last year and 28% in the playoffs in 2005.
