Hamels Scratched

8
Vote

Philadelphia Phillies rookie phenom Cole Hamels is experiencing soreness in the back of his left shoulder. The pain began while Hamels was throwing in the outfield Tuesday. The Phillies are being cautious and scratching him from his scheduled start on Wednesday night. The Phillies decided to start Jon Lieber against the Mets on Wednesday with Brett Myers going Thursday afternoon. Hamels will return to Philadelphia on Wednesday for an evaluation.

Update
Hamels has been placed on the 15-day disabled listed, retroactive to May 19, with a strained left shoulder.

The Mets have trouble hitting rookie lefties, so this can only be good for the Mets.

Yeah but Pean, those were not pitching or arm injuries. His broken arm was from playing football, and his broken hand was from defending a teammate in a fight. Last years injury was to his back, but he has not experienced any problems there in many months. Due to these non-arm injuries, one would actually expect his arm to be fresh.

I realize a broken arm is technically an "arm" injury but it is not from pitching so it is different.

Well, had he experienced elbow problems or shoulder problems in the minors, then soreness would be something to worry about. However, his injuries came from non-baseball related activities such as playing football or fighting. These types of injuries are not the kind to recur; whereas, elbow strains or shoulder cramps might.

During the Mets-Phillies game there was a graphic showing Hamels's injury history. My favorite was "Broken Left Hand, 2004. Cause: Bar Fight".
