Gus Zernial (Gus Edward Zernial) was born on June 27, 1923 in Beaumont, Texas. He made his Major League debut on April 19, 1949 for the Chicago White Sox. In 1949, his rookie year, he hit .318 with 5 home runs and 38 RBI. Zernial played for the Chicago White Sox, Philadelphia Athletics, Kansas City Athletics and Detroit Tigers over the course of his 11 year career.

There is some disagreement on what was Gus Zernial's most productive season. Some believe that it was 1953, when he slugged 42 home runs, hit for a .284 average and knocked in 108 runs. However, others believe that it was 1951, when he slugged 33 home runs and knocked in 129 runs.
