Born on June 22, 1877 in Humboldt, Iowa, Gus Thompson (John Gustav Thompson) played for the Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals over the course of his 2 year career. Thompson broke into the bigs on August 31, 1903 with the Pittsburgh Pirates, and put up a 4.28 ERA in 103 innings pitched in 1906, his rookie year.
