Gus Bell (David Russell Bell) was born on November 15, 1928 in Louisville, Kentucky. He made his Major League debut on May 30, 1950 for the Pittsburgh Pirates. In 1950, his rookie year, he hit .282 with 8 home runs and 53 RBI. Bell played for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Cincinnati Reds, New York Mets and Milwaukee Braves over the course of his 13 year career.

There is some disagreement on what was Gus Bell's most productive season. Some believe that it was 1953, when he slugged 30 home runs, hit for a .300 average and knocked in 105 runs. However, others believe that it was 1955, when he slugged 27 home runs, hit for a .308 average and knocked in 104 runs.
